Many states around the world enforce outright or partial travel bans to people living with the disease. Travellers are routinely subjected to mandatory health tests, and many states’ policies are unclear on their barriers to entry. There is no public health rationale for restricting liberty of movement or choice of residence on the grounds of HIV status. The bans only serve to reinforce stigma and drive people living with HIV underground.
