  when there is the slightest possibility that you will provoke assailants and potentially turn a bad situation such as purse snatching into a much more serious encounter such as homicide. There is no real replacement for a personal fire-arm, that's why the cops still carry guns and reach for those FIRST in a potentially life threatening encounter, pepper-sprays and tasers are strickly secondary options.
