Problem with that is what if the batteries die while you're out? You can't proceed to a manual unlock from the outside with that device.

    • If the batteries die

The AP501 runs on 6V power supplied by 4 AA batteries located on the inside of the door. If these batteries run low, there will be both visual and audible warnings each time the lock is used. If the batteries are allowed to drain completely, then you would need to use the 9V temporary power terminal to temporarily supply power to the lock. The terminal is located just under the keypad.

Even in case of a complete battery drain, the passcode and Tag Key registrations are preserved so that you still need one or the other to release the lock with a 9V battery.

With the 9V battery terminals on the outside (untrusted side of the door), doesn't this create an opportunity for another problem? Someone could come prepared with a portable/mini voltage transformer (the size of a 9v battery) and overload the terminals to cause damage to the lock (electronically), which will then result with a non-responsive lock.

    • Bypass circuitry

They have already thought of this. The AP501 has bypass circuitry that protects the PCB in case of a high-voltage attack.

I've done some reading on this lock, and I have to admit I am very impressed. Check out how it does when they shoot bullets at it. I probably can't post links here, but just go to youtube and search for AP501 and you will see the video.

One of the only downsides I have to admit, is the price. Between $325-350 is a bit pricey for a deadbolt. But you get what you pay for, and it is a neat gadget.

  • so we

need to install a handle bar to push the door open and close? or a door knob for the "push close"?

  • I have a

simular one, except I have a key for when the batteries go dead. I like it except when the batteries die.
