Mike Bolton, whose father was recently released from prison, is the romantic rival of Vint Glade for the hand of fellow bank employee Emily. In this scene Vint uses Mike's shame over his father to embarass him, while keeping a close eye on a hefty check that Mike cashes. A check whose funds will surface later in Vint's crime of passion:)
