    • Vulcan Gun info

      The A-10 uses the Vulcan gun system which can fire at various rates up to 6000 rounds/minute (100/sec!). It uses ammunition made from depleted uranium for a very hard hitting punch (due to the heavy projectile mass). The recoil from the gun is so severe, that the gun is offset sideways so that the firing barrel (1 of 6) is always aligned with the centerline of the aircraft. Upon firing, the airspeed drops significantly. The amount and variety of external ordnance that this aircraft can carry is the highest of any in it's size. An amazing aircraft with a functional beauty all it's own; affectionately nicknamed the "Warthog" by it's crew!

      The term "Vulcan" gun actually applies to an entire class of multiple barrel, high discharge weapons initially developed by GE starting in 1946. The original weapon spawned a new family of guns of varying calibers with firing rates as high as 10,000 SPM (shots per minute)! Barrel number varies as well, with as few as 3, or as many as 7. "Vulcan" was the ancient Roman god of fire, so it seems a fitting name for this family of fire power!

    This vid is on a firing range and not in Iraq. It is quite old. It was taken well before 2002. As far as ANYONE commenting on Iraq. I believe you have an opinion, but remember it is a very limited one unless you've been there. All most every Iraqi I met while I was there from 2003-2004 was happy that they were not under a dictator anymore and had a chance to put in their own govt.

    I am pretty sure that video predates 9/11 even.
