the real thing
While watching this home made video I saw the people running from the beach. I guess I don't understand in the first place if they knew it was coming, why they would be there. How many lives were lost because they felt the need to gawk at it? It's a show of force from Mother Nature and a true tragedy. And to Elsje...we pray for the safety of your friends.

This is only true if you are on one side of the underwater earthquake. Every wave is made up of 2 waves, each travelling in opposite directions. On one side, there will be a dip in the sea travelling in front of the wave (hence the retreat of the water), on the other there is no dip just a wave. When the tsunami struck Thailand, the Thai side of the wave had the dip. The wave that travelled the other direction had no dip and hence the people on those parts of the world had no warning. Just a 90ft wave travelling at 110mph.

Nihongo wakaran nara katteni teigi o shinaide kudasai.
If only everyone in the world had been taught that if you see the sea RETREATING there was a SEISMIC SEA WAVE (the CORRECT name) approaching! The sea always goes OUT first! Then the first seismic sea wave arrives. The term "tidal wave" is incorrect, because these waves are not caused by the TIDES! And unfortunately, the Japanese word, "Tsunami" simply means "tidal wave!"
