Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works, the group that created among others the U-2 and JSF planes has developed this crazy looking aircraft.
Something the Michelin tire man left in the toilet.

The major flaw of such past designs is that they could not handle strong winds and serious storms which doomed the design. So not having your "balloon" blow away in the wind is a major design requirement. Sure modern weather forcasts can help there but one major failure can doom the project. Ground is good. There is certainly market need for such a craft including heavy cargo lift and passangers.

By muttkat 1233392704 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis is a mutiuse platform, it will be excellent for rescue & supply in disaster zones, imagine having these during the aftermath of the tsunami in Indonesia, flying food, clothing, & medical supplies by the ton into say a soccar field. plus one could be equiped with communications gear & used as a radio relay to reestablish radio links to coordinate rescue efforts.

By aelwero_too 1229385668 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove...this is a low level flyer. It won't experience any buffetting you get when you go real high up in the athmosphere, but I could be wrong.
However this is a 'heavy lifter' & I saw it before on TV & was very impressed with it :)
I hope it takes off (pardon the pun)...
To provide its own lift. Because i couldn't tell.

By blackcat009 1228176012 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveShort Run application for cargo and some passenger traffic, particularly where water or terrain inhibit rail or road activity. Often takes years to get investment return; could easily be converted to day time solar on smaller versions if one desired same.

By gtcruiserman 1228146205 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt is supposed to be a heavy lifter which will eventually replace extremely expensive and aging aircraft such as the Sikorsky Skycrane, which is more than 40 years old.
This is the only replacement aircraft that can meet or exceed the lifting capacities of the Skycrane for short haul very cargo lifting. It is also comparatively cheaper to operate and maintain than the Skycrane ever was.
I wondered when the would add airfoil lift to a blimp, intead of hovercraft engines in the feet they could add large surface velcro and avoid the large crews that are needed to tether regular blimps. Blimps maybe the next mass tran air ships if we run out of oil and hydrogen wont work for commercial craft.
