It's already hot at 11 a.m. as we pull our 2009 Nissan GT-R into the visitor's parking lot at GM's proving grounds in Arizona. The Japanese supercar looks like a spaceship next to the aging, 1960s-era brick buildings that front the massive desert test facility on the outskirts of Phoenix.

Although the few GM employees who see the GT-R barely pay it any attention, we suspect they know why it's here. Somewhere deep inside this test facility there's a 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 getting prepped for a comparison test, and now the competition has arrived.

We make a few calls and sign a few release forms before a Cyber Gray ZR1 emerges from the main gate and pulls up next to the GT-R. The driver gets out, hands us the keys and gives a friendly warning, ""Go fast carefully.""

From here on out, it's the King Kong of Corvettes versus the Godzilla of Japan. We'll drive both cars more than 300 miles back to Los Angeles before putting them on a dyno, running our customary round of instrumented tests and wrapping it all up with hot laps on the road course at Streets of Willow.

  • THIS Video is a bunch of B.S.

    Top Gear video on this site shows that the GT-R does a 3.5sec. 0-60 not 3.8 like mentioned in this video, that is the first part of the B.S. The second part is that they dont mention anything about top speed, how come? GT-R is a 4 door that seats 5 and costs only 75k, and the corvette is a 2 seat race car that costs over 100k. These cars are not in the same category and the GT-R is a much better buy. Dont be dumb and go buy a race car that you cant even put a snow board or a pair of skis in. I think they need to change the driver of the GT-R and make this a bit more fair. To be continued....

      Do you have any idea how fast .3 seconds is? there are infinite variables that can effect your gate speed, driver, temperature, humidity, lane conditions and more can cost you .3 sec, the one thing you are right about is that they are not in the same category, with the Vette you get over 50 years of craftsmanship, what do you get with the Nissan?.... a piece of crap rebuilt Datsun, thats what your getting.

      Absolutely not. The GT-R is an amazing buy. It reasonably priced,includes more functionality, and has a better interior than the ZR1. The ZR1 is built for the tracks, and its design is mainly based on aesthetics. The ZR1 does offer more power for those who live on the track, but like most of us. We don't. I love the ZR1, but I think the GT-R would be better to live with.

    you anti corvette guys crack me up. for years the corvette has almost equalled the competition at less than half the price. the gtr is a very good car, the corvette just happens to be better as the bugatti is better at over a million dollars more.

    corvette = 638HP
    GTR = 480HP

    corvette = 3352lbs
    GTR = 3800lbs

    corvette = US$105,000 to US$115,000
    GTR = US$76,840 to US$79,090

    Base on this video lap time
    corvette = 1:23:87
    GTR = 1:25:09

    So with so much higher HP and lighter body, just 1sec+ faster than the GTR? proud?

    officialy nissan gtr does 0-60 in less than 3.5 secounds. Germy Clarkson did 0-60 in 3.5 secounds. and gtr has got half of the size engine of corvet. Its piece of crap comparing to gtr

      Not being able to buy the corvette coz u r poor doesn’t mean its bad it means you cant afford it losers.
      This corvette ZR1 is faster than the Porsche GT2, Lamborghini murcielago, M5, M6, Ferrari 599 and it’s the cheapest of them all and I mean in all aspects cheaper to insure cheaper to run
