  • If you are a striker ..you must strike

karate man walks in to the grappler with his defenses down!!!!! He does not take the bull by the horns!!! hit him fast hit him hard or keep your distance. in one on one combat jiu-jitsu is tough to beat. make the grappler play your game (if you can). make him defend himself... GRASSHOPPER!

I bet my life this fight had restrictions, notice the open hand punch as a example/

they both threw punches with closed fists on the ground... maybe the open handed thing was a... umm.. a F**king KARATE chop. bjj has been tested against all the best striking arts and there is a reason proffesional strikers learn jiu jitsu.

Nothing I enjoy more than seeing a shotokan man getting his arse pounded. This guy seems to enjoy pain, as he walks straight into the bjj guy, then allows him to sit on him and punch him. I'm screaming at the screen "elbow him in the balls you tit!"

    • A striker entering an MA tournament, is ...

Yeah, unless you're actually fighting.. Striking is going to lose pretty much for sure. Because the rules, unfortunately for strikers, remove most of their most valuable tools, and leave most of the tools available for a grappler in play.

If you really wanted to see "who would win!?" you'd have to hold tournaments with pretty much no rules, which would mean no gloves, small joint locks, and breaking limbs would be okay. Try punching yourself once in the cheek with mild strength with a glove, and then with your bare hand.

But it makes sense, because I don't think anyone wants to enter a tournament where the other guy is going to be breaking your arms and legs, or your skull.

      I know I sure wouldn't =)

    • The original UFC

If you can get ahold of the first 4 UFC tournaments. The only restrictions were eye gouging and biting. You could hit to ANYWHERE else including the nuts and throat. There were no gloves and no rounds.clawing pinching pressure points were still allowed. you could also hold the cage for leverage. BJJ still one 2 or 3 of those first four.

    • what rules...

give favor to a grappler? In most MMA now it is favoring strikers since they are more and more often standing fighters up when there isn't enough action, when the grappler is in a dominate position.
BJJ was tested in NHB (No Hold Barred) fighting in Brazil for decades before it came to the U.S.

By lizard450 1175050121 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • The 4oz. gloves...

were created so that fighters don't break your hand, but still do as much damage.

    • that's true

Whoever gave that guy a black belt probably also asked him if he wanted paper or plastic with that. If you're up against a grappler you don't just run at him with all your weight on your tippy toes.
So now I know what not to do.

BJJ is very affective i have 2 friends that do it and one is a purple belt and he could beat me so bad even if i tried my hardest karate is mainly defencive but BJJ if you get in hand to hand combat with someone thats good at it boy you better be ready for a good beatin.

why strikers dont just side kick BJJ guy in the stomach or front thigh when they charge like that, and it aint like they dont know its coming, i mean thats what BJJ guys do everytime. It would stop em dead in their tracks.

By mard25 1161301275 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • they do...

watch ufc, the strikers have done everything to the bjj guys. there is no such thing as the end all be all move. strikers can beat bjj, wrestling can beat strikers, bjj can beat wrestling. you need to know it all, mixed martial arts is the product of strict disiplins being beaten by unorthadox and mixed styles. if you only train in standup, a ground guy will controll you too well, if you only train bjj, you don't know how to avoid the punches and kicks good enough to close the distance. for your own good (so you don't look foolish) don't copmment on things like this, I don't comment on power rangers, do I?

By Sh1tba6 1177017888 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • That makes me laugh too...

Grapplers look for limbs that can use to throw their opponent of balance and get them to the mat. If you kept throwing the same type of kicks you would end up getting your leg snatched and end up on the mat. Your kickboxing is right out the window then. Prepare to get your face tourmented by elbows or some ligements broken per chance?

By Fried_potato 1165481515 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Well

As you can see The BJJ guy came in with a few punches changed his level and took him down. You can't throw a side kick when you're in punching range... you have to find a balance between good tall posture good for Muay Thai and striking and a good low level good for wrestling. Personally I don't feel a side kick gives me the balance I need to pull back my leg from a grab attempt. This is why we use a teep. If they do grab our teep at full force we having a fighting chance of pulling it back. I am sure kicks are allowed but this karate guy probably fought in shotokan matches. They are rough... but I never really see any good footwork on them and the fights always seem very binary.

Sorry thought this was the gracie vs shotokon guy. This guy got taken down because he didn't use any sort of jab or nothing. The BJJ guy closed the distance (with no small help from the shotokan guy) making his strikes useless...

i am a black belt at karate, have been training for ten years and am lucky that my teacher also teaches bjj. the black belt in this video doesn`t look like he has a clue right from the start.anybody who walks straight into a grapplers hold is going to lose. he should have at least tried what he should have been taught, ie kicking punching and striking, and moving

with just a simple punch at the back of his head or neck , he will die .

Even if he wins, it is only an skill for fighting a single person.

Sorry touches of death dont really exist man. Bjj is the most effective martial arts in the world. Point and case I went up against a black belt in Tae Kwan Do, the guy had 25 pounds on me, and I had been training for 3 months... I choked him out. Karate Tae Kwan Do, there only stylish, not effective. Which is why there not in MMA.

but tae kwon do is more for excersize than for fighting... didn't you watch final fu on mtv? by the way, i am not against tkd, one of the guys who first taught me bjj was a black belt in it... he like it for the flexibility it gave his hips. But it is designed to make you more of an athlete than an actuall combatant. no offense to the life long tkd guys... you can make fun of me for training in Shaolin northern eagle claw kung-fu when I was young and reckless. I'll even fly out to your karate school or what ever. any rules you want, any way you want. I'll even use just bjj, no punches or kicks... you can do anything you want, like your magic back of the head death punches. but seriously, get back to me and we'll make a video to post on this site. it will be proof of one arts supiriority over anothers.

My uncle has masterd Black belt all derees and know that if that was a real black belt fighter that knew he was going to be in a real fight would have knocked the guys adamsapple out of his throat from 5 feet away, he lets the guy hold him too without a hard strike, 6 hard blows from both hands while on the ground will give u time to disable!!!

By CanadianPresident 1161317800 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • yeah...

the thing about that is, your uncle is a better fighter than you because he trains often, not because of a supirior art. The bjj guy trains everyday, every single day. So how would your uncle do against another black belt? if your answer is a one punch victory... you need to stop watching crouching tiger hidden dragon and realize that no one alive can beat everyone with a single move because they have a black belt. sure you could get lucky and hit a guys throat, but if you know how to fight, you keep your chin down and your head moving.

And his little karate chops wont hurt the grappler. Thats the point. What happens when you chop and it doesnt hurt the guy? then what do you do? i guess you get your ass whooped.

Do not let anyone come near you. And 4 u man heard of weak points? If my chops do not work I will hit him in his weak points. there are certain points in your chest, face, shoulder that you can easily hit without power.. comeon be real,, get some air man....

when you fight other black belts in karate class, do you kill them with one punch or is it a little harder to move in on them than it is to move around someone whos never trained? you need to think before you speak, they are both trained fighters, the bjj guy just controlled the fight because the other dude had no ground game.

he's talking about karate, all the good judo schools also study grappling. When you wrestle on the ground, it prepares you for the type of combat Ben790 is talking about. And by the way... a black belt means you payed for a certain amount of classes. If you are really good, you get honorary black belts and get to go to classes for free.

arm bars, knee bars, ankle locks, key locks and many more of the same things bjj has, there is no art that has things other arts dont. thats what mma is all about, find what works for you but also know what works for others and how to avoid those things... you cant block a knee if you cant throw one, you wont see it coming.

i dont study karate, but i know from martial arts tournament that a real karate master would have done much better than that, the reason some black belts suk is cuz some people do martial arts as something to do, others take martial arts to be the best.

(and to clear up all the stupid theories, ive fought jujitsu, taejitsu, kungfu, hapkido, kickboxing, and many more, and i have NEVER seen any of those martial arts do better than the others, its always been the student that wins, not the art, the main thing that wins any fight is the mind)

I have a bb in karate, and have doing BJJ for 8 years now, and trust me you can take someone with the weakest heart and train him in karate for 10 years or in comparison take that same kid a train him in bJJ for 1 year and you'll see if the person makes the difference. It wont. Brazilian JJ simply works. Add your style of stand up and you have your best chances of walking away from a street fight.

I don't completely agree with that. I've met a guy who trained gracie jiu jitsu for a year... Itrained Alan Goes JJ for a month and I believe that my previous experience with traditional martial arts (and wrestling) helped me defeat him. BJJ is a must, but its MMA that brings everything together and makes you the complete champion that you need to be.

there is also the factor of natural athletisism, choachability and sparring. most karate schools are so behind on the sparring concept its disgusting. I can almost gaurentee that the karate masters you are talking about spar at least 5 days a week. Boxing, kick boxing, and vale tudo schools spar every class typically upwards of 85 percent of full power, so it prepares you better for an aggresive attack. Of all the people posting messages, yours is very refreshing, you are very cool for not claiming anything and I would like to thank you for your honesty. Thanks.

its an isrieli fighting system and if you look up their training videos, multiple attackers is a big part of their training. also BJJ can be used to controll a standing opponent like a muiy tai clinch and you can use him as a shield between yourself and the other attackers. it would be used more to gain distance to run off rather than to defeat more than 2 people, but no art can train someone to stop 6 guys who are intent on stomping you out.

    • don't you know...

if you're fighting multiople opponents, they are weak and insecure. why would a skilled fighter need friends to help him? a lot of BJJ moves can be done standing or against a wall. And anyone fighting multiple opponents is going to have a rough time, you head may get kicked a few times during an armbar, but you squirm and move... you might get a black eye, but at least your elbow isn't bending the wrong way!

Where are the other rounds? The karate guy got beat, but he wasn't expecting it. Also if it's not full contact, the karate guy has limitations, he can't for example kick him in the head. Whereas the JJ guy has no limitations as his style is based on wrestling.

    Well done to the Bjj.
Although I would rather start my fight with a straight kick. (Took out 4 guys so far with different types of karate and tae kwon do) just because they try to storm in on me.
One shot and he could be crawling for breath.

    But well done.

  • Quick Note...

I'm sick of seeing all these nerds saying they will kick any black belts ass when in fact they are probably pimply WoW addicts that need to say stuff like that to feel better about themselves. I'm a black belt in Shotokan, 10 years. I also took BJJ for 4 as exercise. Don't group Shotokan with fluffly demonstration like tai

  • Shotokan...

    Look Guys...

allow me to add my two cents, from someone who took Shotokan Karate for 10 years and BJJ for 4.

I've personally seen my Sensei make anyone who challenge him (Marines included) to take him down. Every time they end up with a very heavy dose of humility becasue he whipes the floor with them. So, obviously this guy got his black belt from a *not* so good dojo, probably mostly focusing on competition, and this is a result of that!

Nice tackle! I didn't know this was football? The blackbelt should have either side stepped the the idiot when he ducted his head and slammed his head into the wall or driven his knee straight up through his face then stomped on his chest until his heart stopped beating!!! However, this blackbelt fought like an idiot!

Oh and before every BJJ guy starts, I know no one in karate has ever and never will!?! Your the best we're worst!?! You know everything we know nothing!?! Blah.... Blah.... Blah....

  • What an idiot!

As someone who does Japanese Karate I have to say that this Karate guy is an idiot. It's just common sense not to charge a grappler---it plays right into his hands. he would have been stupid to charge at all. Karate works best as a self-defense art, so he should have let the BJJ guy come to him, and then kick or punch when he got into striking range.

  • hmmm

I myself have taken Shotokan Karate for 8 years and still going strong, although i'm still not a black belt, i'm 2kyu which is 2 belts away.

1.see sec.28, if this didn't have restrictons, he could have snapped the neck,

2.second 18, the black belt jabs and pulls his other hand back, he was doing either a backhand palmstrike, or bring the hand down, either way, its not the martial art, that bjj man is just clearly younger and faster.

    3. i agree with a above statment that the black bbelt was restricted from kicks, i was training for the world championships (it breaks up into small age groups by the way) for 2 years, and from experience, a kick is the most powerful weapon of shotokan, without kicks is like if the bjj guy was missing a arm and a leg.

finally, 4. this is a poor display of Shotokan Karate, !!!!hell he didn't even get into a stance!!!! in my option the blackbelt was poorly trained and/or weak, please don't judge our karate on him ;/

  • Can't rank different martial arts

My roommate has been doing bjj and judo for years and I've been doing taekwondo and hapkido for years. Every Tuesday night is a fight night (open finger gloved grappling/striking) and we're pretty even in terms of victories. In a fight situation, it comes down to how smart you are to utilize the right tools at the right time, but there are no 'best tools'. All about the fighter, not the art. Sometimes luck is a factor too. Both of us have been beaten by our neighbor who has no martial arts training. Over time you will see that size and speed make little difference compared to how well you can keep your cool while pumping adrenaline.

but i notice there are no pure bjj figters at K1 but quite a bit of BJJ fighters in UFC
cuz i heard BJJ's weakness is elbows and knees during the charge attack (any BJJ fighter feel free to correct me if i am wrong)
if a BJJ charge with head if i elbow the back of neck or back and knee the front doesn't that knock him out???

whats your name? where do you fight? oh thats right, no one will ever hear of your amazing fight skills because you are too good to train at a school. and you're so clever to look up a basic takedown defense on google and pretend that you have actually used it on somebody. If you were a fighter the whole game would come to you naturally. maybe you can throw knees... but that is such a small part. its like if you didnt play with your dads balls, you would only be S**king his dick.

    • What are you talking about?

Where are the BJJ reflexes? On the takedown? You don't use reflexes on the takedown. As for the armbar, it was a very smooth bjj transition with no problems at all. The karate guy of course didn't know that to block a takedown like that you have to quickly step back and lean forward at the same time, and to block the armbar he had to hug the bjj guy close to his chest until he manage to flip over. Karate pretty much S**ks at street fighting like these.

All those fancy martial arts moves are just for show and can't be applied in any real life situation if the enemy defends himself. BJJ practitioners completely pwn the fights 9 times out of 10 because they take the fight quickly to the mat and finish it by submission. The flamers who mock the fighting style are just clueless dolts and I hope they'll meat a BJJ practitioner in a fight someday. :)

  • jujitsu has the upper hand

bc it's more orientated to one-on-one fights. Generally the average jujitsu (bjj or other) will have the advantage due to grapple that invalidate any striking techniques. However (and this is a big however) jujitsu is null when facing multiple oponents, where karate is much more eficient. Any jujitsu practicioner will be zeroed against more than one oponent, while karate and other arts will have a higher chance. Still small, but higher nontheless. But I still consider jujitsu as the best one-on-one fighting technique.
