  • No Uses??

Silicate, that repels water - Hmm, so windshilds would not need wipers, comuter boards coated with this would be imperious to water accidents, rain coats that would stay dry in the rain. Wow, bathroom paint that would not mold, wetsuits that weren't. Yeah, beats me, I can't think of any uses either.

    • It also partly comes down...

... to cost of manufacture. If it's phenominally more expensive, then it will greatly curtail the number of markets it could penetrate. Those ideas you list are good ones, though, and there are many more...but if the cost of manufacture is too high, or its ability to bond with other materials is too low, it would greatly criple its marketability. Hopefully they'll work that stuff out, this looks pretty cool.

new inventions are an act of willpower and effort, mostly. Like that toy inventor that spent 10 years inventing solid-color bubbles (read it in a article in Popular Science). Really, it's the water-soluable and surfactant- binding vanishing dye that they invented that really is cool, but hey, if you work through the problems a lot of things are possible. You just better have a market to justify it!

    • Ok mister science

windshields are made of glass (ie silicate or lamens terms, sand ) = 100% hydrophobic
computer boards are made form plastic and metal = 100% hydrophobic
raincoats are made of PVC or other plastic = 100% hydrophobic
bathroom paints can be oil based = 100% hydrophobic
wetsuits are made to get wet. Your thinking of dry suits, which are made of rubber = 100% hydrophobic

basicly every use you suggested is pointless. Before you bash someone else, it's good to actually know what you're talking about first......

      By _mada_ 1152078249
    • hydrophobic, so what?

well as much as computer parts are hydrophobi-c, water can cause to re-route electric currents on your computer, thus making it suceptible to short circuit.

      By nathancgo 1156389019
    • idiot...

ok...first of all, keyboards would need it ...they are made of plastic and metal ...but it would need some type of cover because water accidents do result in a ...how can I say this, catastrophic electricution .... keyboard...

P.S. Remember ...a keyboard is run by electricity ....DUH!!!!

      Sincerely,
Chelsea Gamblin, 13 year old from Palmdale Ca

      By cookiechic 1156051241
    • Actually...

Keyboards are not run on enough power to even jolt the human body. The power isn't even strong enough to pierce the first layer of skin.

      By Reaper621 1215374305
    • Actually, no...

Electrocution means that the person would die from the electric shock. I don't think any one's been electrocuted by their keyboard. Also, don't call someone an idiot if you can't spell all the words you use right.

      By Zanbatou-sama 1157056192
    • For god's sake

that old "you spelt a word wrong" crap - IT DOESN'T MATTER. Of course, if it did, quote "..think any one's been electrocuted by.." it's "anyone's" not "any one's"

      owned.

      By simonmanc 1158426124
    • Heh..

You're joking right? Silicate is made from silicon, not sand or glass.

It is a completely different substance.

Maybe you should know what you're talking about before you get all huffy puffy and do the same thing you're blaming them for.

Those suggestions were actually pretty creative, and would be damn good uses...

      By DivianaHJ 1155608000
    • Wow....

I always enjoy posts that claim people are idiots... yet the content of the post is completely retarded. Let me help you out, son.

If you had actually passed your chemistry class, you would know that sand... which glass is made of.... is Silicon Dioxide, also shortened to Silicate. Perhaps next time you will pay attention to the chemistry teacher, and not be so quick to tell someone they are unintelligent when you, yourself, have displayed unintelligence.

Good job representing your home town, though.

      By Reaper621 1209823074
    • Bathroom paint won't mold - exists.

Bioni Paints are all non-toxic, no voc's and best permanently prevent growth of mold. Nano-technology.

    • Wet Beaches - Needed

      No wet beaches????
man ... where wud i write stuff on sand like " romeo + juliet" and the water erases it ... proving it right.... and and and wat about sand castles???? how do we built them? and and and ... footprints ... we need that ... else wats so romantic walking on the beach? and waterproof stuff? arent there already enough waterproof stuff available?.... mmm i have a water proof camera... well it doesnt have sand in it :D .... well its interesting what this stuff can do ... BUT HELL NO TO REPLACE NATURAL BEACHES!!!! HELLL NOOOOO!!!

      By Pass It On 1154025120
    • Um...

I don't see anywhere where he talks about replacing the beaches.

      By Reaper621 1209755672
    • you can't replace natural beachs

it would take years it would be to expensive and it would be pointless the sand would justpile up over it because of the rock eating fish that make sand are constintly making sand

      By zod227 1178940391

How can I say this..EWWW!! I mean..I kno it'd be for a good cause, but do u really think they [advertisement producers] would publicly advertise something like that?

      By cookiechic 1156051454
    • i wonder...

... how we would implement this into those things you said... interesting uses though. It's amazing that we still use old technology for common things like those. Yeah GORETEX is cool, but not as effcient as this.

and effort, and paper work; lots of paperwork..

      good luck :D

      By Abalanzar 1151687215
    • one use i can think of...

for the roof, light weight, thermal is not a problem( coz it is sand, not sure though), and water proof, not a be invention, but someone is probably using it already, that's why they spent money to research right.

Oh my god this is soooo fake! it's obvious each grand of sand has its on tiny plastic bag it sits in and the man just takes them out of their bags when you aren't looking! SO FAKE!

(note: this is to show all the idiots out there how stupid they look when they try to figure or ruin magic tricks for others ... yes you do look this stupid.)

    By TheMav 1150800591
    • UM NOT FAKE

you dumbass. this is definately not fake because i used this in a chemistry lab last week! and they use it for oil spills and keep storage boxes from freezing in antartica why don't you look up the research before you start critisize people douchebag

what'll happen if someone drinks that stuff? will it form in his belly or what! can this stuff be used instead of the plastic covers of capsules in medicin as a delivery device? does it desolve? evapotate? melt? how does it change its form, and under which conditions???

      By houdaaa 1152663216
    • I think

Ur stomach acid would probably try to eat through the shield of air around the sand ...but then again stomach acid is a liquid... other than that, you would just be havin' some dry poop ....u would probably have to go to the doctor if u swallowed it... They would probably have to give u a C-Section Or worse...a Colonoscopy!!

  • Make your own

Take regular sand and put in oven for an hour to cut down impurities. Then use scotchguard on sand and you have your own stupid "magic sand". Don't buy this stuff in stores cause thats exactly what they do and charge you 10 bucks for this crap.

    By bobdole123 1153204673
  • i remember this stuff

i had it when i was like 8,it was called "squand" i think. you could make some neat underwater castles w/ it

    By TheAznOne 1152350886
  • Around for a while

This stuff has been aroun quite awhile. I used to play with it as a kid about 40 years ago. As I recal it was pretty cool. You can still find it, sometimes, in dollar stores. D

    By djsinprescott 1151006357
  • I've seen this before

when i was little i saw it in a toy store and you would make under water sand castles out of them

    By virgo6 1149798985
  • isn't this old?

I remember playing with this kind of stuff when I was a kid and you could create your own underwater aquarium and stuff I believe

    By Angel of Odin 1147888511
    • i remember that too

i used to have some.. it was awesome... i doubt it would really cost that much to manufacture it. no one probably feels they can make a big enough profit off of it, is probably why we don't hear about it.

Im not htat old yet im still in middle school but didnt he say that it was hydraphobic isnt that fear watrer or something like that

    By KungFuKris 1142474704
    • hydrophobic...

it means it repels water another example is found in soap...it has a hrydrophobic hend which attracts to dirt and a hydrophillic or waterloving end that attracts to water ... the probal manner of being hydrophobic in the sands case is prolly a -ve charge ... i dont know for certain but i think so seeing as hyrdophobic stuff is usally -ve charge as wqater is...as it has a slight charge ... i dunno exactly the 2nd parts just my theory ....

      By ahsocurious 1144795410
    • Sorta...

...you'll learn more about in biology... but basically it means it doens't interact with water, and doesn't mix with it. Another example of a hydrophobic substance is lipids (fats) which form phospholipid bilayers that clump up in order to not touch water. That's what cell membranes are made of. :-)

    • FAKE

It`s fake, i know i`m a chemist. This is faked

      By hoin 1139492436
    • Really?

So it's your word against pretty much everyone else that agrees it exists. Hm... Oh yeah, and you know you should probably use proper grammer once you finish 3 grade... I highly doubt you're a chemist, and if you are, you're probably a really crappy one, like a sanitation chemist...

      By Generic Azn 1142985125
    • ok... pump yo breaks...

first of all, u need to stop focusing on his problems, such as proper grammar, and focus on your more prominent language problems, such as correct spelling. U need 2 stop putting other people down, because it's not going to make u look any better, or for that matter, feel any better... So I'd say u r just wasting your breath, and making yourself look like and ass... sorry to say it but it's true...

      By cookiechic 1156052988
    • WTF does "pump your breaks" me...

Anyway, I only commented on him b/c he made a retarded comment. Now, if he didn't respond, it's not your job to defend him. He's probably realized that he's an idiot, and I'm right. So, the purpose of my comment was to let him know that he was an idiot. Next, you're doing the exact same thing you accuse me of doing in your own comment. You're telling me that I'm a being an ass by telling him he's retarded. However, you yourself are criticizing me in the process which just goes to show that you're being extremely hypocritical. Besides, the main idea of my comment is that the guy is an idiot and I tell him he's an idiot and he doesn't knwo what he's talking about. The sole purpose of your comment is to insult me. So basically I think you should take your own advice and shut up b/c you don't know what you're talking about.

      By Generic Azn 1156106717
    • ok....

first of all ....i kno what I'm talking about ....u need 2 calm down ....and pump yo breaks means slow ur roll ...cuz i'd say u movin a bit to fast with these rational - ass comments ...and u have absolutely no right to call him an idiot, and have no right to say he needs to finish the third grade ....he's probably older than u for all i care ...and i don't need to shut up..you do...and if anybody should be acting all hypocritical ...it's you, with the way you are talking to me ....but i now realized that i shouldn't have called you an ass ...because i just felt so ....like i was involved in the situation ...maybe it's just me...but i still stand firm to my replay...u had no right to call him an idiot

      By cookiechic 1156382085
    • Hypocrite

No you dont'.... You're being a bitch and butting into where you dont' need to be. Stop being annoying. I'm not being hypocritical b/c I'M not the one who was saying that I hsouldn't be insulting others. YOU ARE because YOU're getting onto me for criticizing him. But in the process, you're criticzing me. Get it?
