the USA by this time were winning the war in the east and Japan was being beaten back almost until surrender anyway. in Europe it was a simular situation. USA and other allies were beginging to win the war. france was being reclaimed and russia was was pushing the germans back. from what i have learned the main reason for the bombing was to reduce the number of casualties for the USA. the war would have been won even if there was no bombing.

The majority of people alive today have little concept as to the situation being faced. This situation was very sad. The Japanese society at the time was very akin to the people of Jonestown and the modern Islamic suicide bombers. The Japanese literally believed at that time that their emperor was an infallible god and that their prosperity was solely dependent upon their obedience to this "god". Although their is NO relationship whatsoever between being one's being spiritual or one being a religious fanatic, this twisted mentality still exists. Short of real divine intervention history is doomed to keep repeating itself.

Because of the Japanese culture, almost everyone on the island (men, women, and children) would have fought to the death if we invaded, even if we killed all their leaders. This would have cost MILLIONS of lives on both sides, while the combined death toll from both bombs was in the THOUSANDS.
