First of all they ask questions with answers equal to 6. Then the idiots asks the last questions where all the answers are 8!!! All the questions asked either equalled to 6 or 8 and it wasn't even random!! So of course the bloody dog's smart coz the people around it are flippin' stupid!!!

Yea, i dont know about this, i learned to read in grade 3rd, and multicaply in grade 2, i really doubt the dog is doing this in her head, as much as i love dogs, and appreciate what intelligence they have. It don't believe it knows multiplication, because of the trainer's lame story, ONE day.. i just realized she knew what multiplication was, shame on her if its a sham, but congrats if its real

When the right number of taps is reached she must nod or flare her eyes or something to give the dog a cue to stop tapping.

(Quick note first: they took the camera off the owner almost every time the dog had obtained the right "math answer". We don't have a chance to see what tiny signals there might have been, in spite of what one of the judges said. A blink can be a signal.)

Well, to be precise, my girlfried (part of an organization that teaches basic manners, recall, etc. where I am), I think I can say that this dog is quite well trained. It had a really _heavy_ duty drive for the biscuit but was able to cut it off when commanded (did fail at the end, though)

We are fostering a "rescue dog" (one rescued from a bad situation) and, although my girlfriend's favorite dog is otherwise fairly good and extremely polite, her jealousy of the temp has such incredible drive that she stops thinking (you can almost see the cogitation flying out the window) and just goes right to it. Nothing quite like separating two 60 pound dogs when one of them is trying to do the other in. Haven't lost any fingers, yet.

Be that as it may, I've found that most people really -don't- have any idea how intelligent that dogs are or how they think. Just because they don't verbalize doesn't mean that they don't know what is going on and what they intend doing about it. Also, dogs have entirely different 'dog-cues' that most people don't know - if you want to train a dog to 'come', and the dog DOES come, don't pat them on the head but acknowledge what they've done and retain their attention, possibly even moving back (going towards is a 'dog-cue' to stop). Dogs don't like to be patted on the head as much as we'd think. (try straddling a dog from behind to give it eye drops - THAT'S a killer)

And dogs naturaly prefer to be one of a group while cats are natural loners
Dogs will gradually learn stuff if it seems to please their bosses (us).
Cats take longer to train, but it can be done.

Just look up Clever Hans... It was a horse that could supposedly count, but actually was taking non-verbal cues from the audience that assembled to watch him. As far as I know, it wasn't even a con - no one, not even the horse's owner, knew that the horse couldn't really count... That whole ordeal taught scientists how important it is to properly test the intelligence of a given animal, instead of doing it the way that was portrayed here.

The dog is really cute, and this probably would fool most people, but I don't think that a dog would have the cognitive ability to comprehend multiplication. Actually, I doubt that it could understand the concept of "number", which is something that not even all human societies have. There are some isolated African tribes about which I have read who had no conception of any number higher than 3. I find it doubtful that a dog can do something that entire human populations fail to be able to do.

When to quite tapping the paw, she does the counting for the dog, look for the signal, they show the paw mostly so you can not see the owners signal, everyone looking at tyhe dogs paw counting with the dog, Not for the signal, could be as simole as her shuting her eyes, or a rized finger on her knee.

sure the math must be a trick somehow - she must be signalling - i just don't buy it that a dog can do sums.
BUT.... the first stuff with the bone - wow, that was amazing - my dog is really well trained but if i put a bone down....well, once it's in his mouth i'll only get it back in soft brown form!!

1. there was years of training behind it. the owner taught the dog what to do through speech recognition and repetition. Dogs can only repeat what they're taught.
2. The dog doesn't know what 4 4 means, only that if it does what its told it will be rewarded. Again, it remembers what the owner taught him. Dogs have no need for math. Sure, it's 8, but why is it 8? The dog doesn't know nor care.

There's no intelligence in repetition. It's the same way a parrot can speak. There's a difference in being able to do something and actually knowing what it means.

Very persistent owner though, to be able to spend that much time with the dog in order to train it. I'm not saying it's not interesting, I'm just saying it doesn't prove anything about the intelligence of a dog. If you followed every command of your parents, per se, would you think of yourself as intelligent?

A dog would defend his familiy until death and a cat would run away. a dog gives you his whole heart and time, and all we gibe back is the love and time we can spare. think about that!

As a student of psychology I must disappoint you - it is neither this dog brilliant inteligence, nor some intended help from the woman. It all bases ojn nonverbal communication and nonverbal signals, that this dog perceives from the woman and the audience. He is not intelligent, but just very sensitive to little changes in gesture.

the only two answers were 6 and 8. The owner must've given a hand signal when the show hosts asked questions ending with the number 8. Pretty smart for a dog though.

I met this amazing dog and played with her in a shoe store this afternoon in Asheville, N.C.Maggie is the sweetest and smartest dog that I ahve ever entoured. Her owner was so polite and gracious in allowing me to enjoy playing with Maggie for a few minutes. I didn't know she was such a star.

Every time the dog stops lifing up her paw is when the owner stops looking at her paw and fingers a treat. I think that is the sign/trick. It's very cute though and a smart doggy for learning how to do this.

dog could also be able to figure out when to stop by people in room... everyone is into it... anticipating... so when gets to last number body language of entire room changes... people tense up slighty hold their breath for maybe second... there is absolutely NO way u can say that this dog can do math... but is cool

I have read once about a horse that can do tricks like this. It was investigated by many and finally it was discovered that the trainer gives signs to the animal to stop the counting. this signs can be subliminal, such that the trainer isnt aware that he is making signs, in the dogs case it was the trainer begining to smile that made the horse stop. the trainer was not a cheat, he actually didnt notice his smile forming early. it is much more likely that the animal learned to detect such signs than to learn the vocabulary and the math. note, again, the trainer may not be aware that he is giving the animal any signs. Dogs are known to detect frightned people or and I assume they know to detect angry/happy/sad as well. It is very likely that the trainer has signs for being nerveous (keep counting) and signs for being satisfied (stop counting) that the dog detects and acts upon.

I could not see the owner through most of the dogs answers but briefly she seemed to hold her mouth shut during the count. I was not given a view when the dog stopped. I wonder if the mouth was opened to clue the dog. It was an excellent act.
