Proof the storm surge came nowhere near overtopping the 17th street canal floodwall.
I was in my S. Lakeview home during Katrina with my 10 cats - my car had broken down on Saturday. When the water rose in my area, it came up gradually and was not up to my neck until the next morning when I was rescued.
I was able to rescue 8 of the cats.
My heart goes out to all of the folks who witnessed the levee breach and the horror of watching their homes fill to the roofs with water. And for all of the people that they were able to save despite their own personal tragedy.
The fact that the levee breach was caused by poor engineering and maintenance by the United States Army Corps of Engineers makes it all the more tragic. Had their levees not been pushed aside by the water that was not even near the top of them, New Orleans would have been spared most of the devastating flooding.
