I'm pretty sure they're filming this through a glass surface. That's why it's dark, they didn't want the reflection of the camera to show up. However if someone walks past the glass in the forground wearing light clothing, their reflection will show up on the glass.

I mean the line of appearance / dissappearance is very well and clear drawn.
