Both start from the same place for the same climb.
Which is the best offroad vehicle? You decide.
1) i dont think its the same hill
2) the audi had a run start..
3) from the engine sound its probably tuned...
4) its a known fact that the smaller the wheels in width... the better the traction.
5) the one driving the hummer is bloody idiotic driver...
....seems like only the back wheels are spinning, nothing is being turned up under the front like the rear wheels...then when it slides down the hill, the rear wheels are spinning, but the front are locked. Just an observation.
By reality check 1157132308 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewhat you need is a locking centre differential, as fitted to some land rovers and range rovers (and no doubt other things). in a low-grip situation, the power will go to the wheel/s which offer the least resistance; if two wheels are on tarmac and two on snow, the ones on snow will spin. with diff-lock, all four wheels have to turn at the same speed. it can make a HUGE difference, as i found out in my old land rover on roads through the pyrenées in heavy snow.
By harvestmouse 1157205272 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removebecause you know what else has locking diffs? audi quattros. well the 90 doesnt have a lockable center but it is a locking, and there are lockers on the rear. The original Quattros and 4000 quattros had lockable center and rears. Quattro>the rest

By ACIDicUtters 1157687675 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove1. Yes, it is the same hill, but the two movie clips are not made on the same day. There was about a week between them. First went Hummer, then Audi.
2. Neither of the cars had a run start. They both started from about the same position. A friend of mine just started recording a bit too late(Canon Powershot A60 is also a bit slow).
3. Audi is not tuned, but it is quite rare, Audi 90 Quattro with 2.3 liter 125kW engine.
4. Yes, on snow you are correct and here I can comment on which tires the Hummer used.
5. that is absolutely correct.
But actually, two things that made a difference here:
1. Audi is way much lighter in weight
2. Hummer is with diesel engine that does not rev so quickly.
-diesel's produce more torque (pulling power- basically)
- the hummer is a piece of S**t anyway
- a week in between runs?! I'm sure the ground was exactly the same a week later huh? Not harder, dryer?
- You should have had them both just go like maniacs and fight for the best line up the hill at the same time, that would have been awsome
F**k YOU HUMMERS RULE YOU PEICE OF S**t

By forexBowMan 1157436735 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIn your 4th point you wrote that the smaller the wheel width, the better the traction. I tell you that the fact is the opposite of what you think. Check it out!
By The_Nomadic 1157405777 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHave you ever walked on snow? did you sink? what did you do to stop that - put BIG snow shoes on. So simply small wheels will SINK through the snow, and provide better traction - this is the opposite to what happens on the road where wheel surface area helps. If you don't believe me use the internet for research and look up snow tires, I think that you will find they are weedy little tires with metal studs... not honking great wide mud tires.
btw why don't we just compare a bicycle to a hummer, it would make as much sense as two cars on different hills.
If it happened that the Hummer was able to climb off that hill and the Audi did not, then this video would not be posted in MetaCafe.
By CoJam 1157382358 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewhen the audi goes up its sunny and the ice would have melted into the dirt to create more traction and with the hummer it was overcast making the snow softer

By zazzothecat 1157106745 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removenot for snow and ice the thinner the tire the better, ever watch rally the tires look like they belong on a bike
By SlapaHo 1157131199 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeon a slippery surface like mud or snow, the important factor is the mass per square inch, so that grip can be found beneath the surface. the tyres need to dig down, not float. my car has 135/80/15 tyres (what??? - yes it is a citroen 2cv6) with the engine weight over the driven wheels. It can traverse snow a lot better than a more powerful car with fat tyres, or one with front engine+rear wheel drive. High power can also work against progress, as the wheels are more inclined to slip if high torque is transferred to them. 33bhp does me fine. I would be willing to demonstrate this against another car in snow, and maybe will do so when winter arrives, if only to demonstrate how this works.
By harvestmouse 1157112100 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIn deep mud or snow wide tires have the advantage. When it's too deep you have to float it. You're not going anywhere if you bottom-out. Any off-roader will tell you the same.

By jack3889 1157619338 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeonly the distribution of the friction across the surface will, the Meu factor is static, the mass wouldn't change much, friction force remains Mg(Meu), so I don't see how this will change anything.
I just think it was a different hill.
The fact that the thinner tires will sink more into the ground, allowing the tires to hit dirt rather than snow. However I am glad you studied a bit of physics though. You are right about meu normally.
By airguy721 1157131961 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removea run start if the hummer had a run start it could have went up faster than the audi
By jack3889 1157617622 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove1 - Even if the Audi was tuned it wouldn't have any effect. This isn't about engine power.
2 - "Smaller wheel width - better traction"??? Directly moronic. Come on! I don't think Saciatore has ever even sat in a 4x4.
3 - But the hummer driver is no Einstein, I'll agree, they usually never are.
Hummer isn't an offroad vehicle. It is a big piece of metal junk suitable for picking up hookers and occationally a bit of warfare. Spend your money on something else, that's my advice.
have u ever seen snow in ur life... ive been livin in the mountains for 11 yrs believe me i no wht im talkin abt...
as for number 2...never been in a 4x4 the only 4x4 ive never been in is the hummer cause its to wide for the roads and the porshe cayenne cause its too expensive...
and yes having a tuned car does matter.. even stage 1 turbo which is next to nothin will have some effect..
bt wht u said abt the hummer...haha totally true..the only worse thing then the hummer is the hummer limo...dat thing prob. does 10 meters per gallon..
the Audi is tuned, the engine is that, the h is in 1 wheel drive, blah blah....... Audi is 3 classes over H on slippery road due to H`s wheight so leave it as it is... besides H is not the best 4WD in the world so why that fuss ?
By rogozaurus 1157148792 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI am the editor of my local 4 X 4 magazine and feel I have to comment. The 2 main issues with hill climbing are weight and traction. Power, torque, suspension setup and tyres affect these. The hummer has the following disadvantages of a low power to weight ratio, due to its huge weight. It also has a prehistoric suspension setup (not always a major problem). The conditions appear worse for the audi (snow offers slightly less traction than the mud the H1 seems to be on). I cant tell the type of tyres on the audi but its a simple matter of its weight and suspension that gave it the edge. Nothing more. More give in the suspension means more evenly distributed wieght on the wheels. Weight also affects driving technique. I have seen a light weight landrover with rock hard suspension with diff lock fail a hill climb while giving it full power. A standard range rover on standard, slightly deflated tyres (bigger footprint) and very soft suspension plodded up on little more than tick over. I would rate the audi in this case as it delivered the goods but it is not a fair comparison of overall performance, and the audi did a fair bit of slipping at the crest of the hill. On the road, the audi would be king, no doubt but with tiny ground clearance it would be no match for the H1. Personally, neither are ideal, give me a (modified) land rover discovery and I will show you some real off roading. The H1 driver doesnt have much of an idea what he is doing. I would put money on it he would get further in reverse. Something often overlooked.

I am an audi fan, they are awesome, they have center and rear locks.
Hummers dont, they have torsen.
I used to have an Iltis (VW jeep with audi quattro 4wd system) awesome car.
Hummers are good otherwise they would not used them in the army.
Every car has different characteristics.
compare Hummer VS MErc G wagen (G wagen all the way)
The driver of the hummer is not very experienced. ruts? the audi will get high center. a little rock will get the audi high centered.
different cars, not valid comparsion
I would personally rather have the audi, but this comparison is not fair. The audi is lighter, smaller, and had a rolling start.

Not all hummers are 4x4\'s, Tires are Tires, they come equiped with off road tires. should have no problem, you can see tires moving the snow so it has grip. Diesel power is better than gas, Giving more low end torque, theres you problem to much power causing wheel spin been better off to try and creep up hill.
2.the car was all wheel drive you can see both right tires spitting snow.
Whats even more funny is how crappy them hummers handle >Period. i live in snow country and i pass them like there standing still. if you can\'t handle it, don\'t drive it.
That Audi is much lighter than the Hummer, so this ain't wierd, but if you would take a long track with many obstacles, I think the Hummer would do better, and that there were something missing under the Audi.
