Are you saying that they should weigh the same because a fluid ounce is a unit of weight and not a unit of of volume? Would a pint of, say, mercury weigh the same as a pint of water because they are both 16 fluid ounces?

When substances are dissolved in a solvent they can become ionized and form weak bonds with the solvent which in this case is water which is a good solvent because it's molecules are polarized. The volume of the solution after it is mixed can be significantly less than the volumes of the solute and the solvent before they are mixed even though the weight is the same. Regardless of that, common sense would tell you that not all substances are the same density so you shouldn't expect two different substances of equal volume to weigh the same. When he says "2 unopened 12 ounce cans of cola weigh the same right?" he is trying to mislead you into believing that the cans are 12 ounces (weight) instead of 12 fluid ounces (volume).

Also shown with your example, the fluid oz designation does not refer to weight, but volume. Hence overall volume remains constant, weight varies.

Sucrose is also much sweeter than glucose so can be used more sparingly, hence it's commonly used in diet food lines as a sweetner.

you had two mistakes here. whether an object floats or sinks is totally based upon density, therefore two different sized objects that weigh exactly the same may have a different buoyancy.
Mistake number two, fluid ounces is a unit of volume, not a unit of weight. duh they are gonna be a different weight, they are the same size but they are different things, therefore they are gonna wight a different amount. fluid ounces =/= ounces. :D

one thing you did not do is take out the liquid and weigh them in the same container seperatally of course. the can says FLUID OUNCES not OUNCES. the can should weight that difference.

two things matter, the amount of carbonation and the density of the liquids. First, diet soda does not contain corn syrup, it usually contains either sucralose or saccarine. Pepsi has sucralose, which decreases the ability of the soda syrup to absorb the carbonation it also makes it less dense. Another thing the measurement of the cans is in fluid ounces which is slightly less than actual ounces and you scale measures actual ounces. Not less soda, just more released CO2 and less density, actually by volume diet soda cans have more soda syrup.

The 12 ounces listed on the cans refer to the fluid volume of the product, not the weight. Someone needs to go back to school to learn the difference.

just demonstates how our education system if failing. its a shame that its not better known that fluid ounces are a measurement of volume and not weight and when you add a substance with specific gravity greater than one to water,the volume of water mixture will now be heavier.

A fluid ounce is a measurement of volume, not weight. 16 fluid ounces = 1 pint. a fluid ounce of sugar takes up the same volume as a fluid ounce of water. an ounce is a measurement of weight. 16 ounces = one pound.

Dissolving a substance in liquid also usually lowers the freezing point. Because more sugar is added to regular soda than artificial sweetener to diet cole, the freezing point of regular soda is lower. Diet soda will freeze before regular soda at the same temperature.
