By seajohndec 1248263443 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveAre you saying that they should weigh the same because a fluid ounce is a unit of weight and not a unit of of volume? Would a pint of, say, mercury weigh the same as a pint of water because they are both 16 fluid ounces?
By Blatzbaby 1232068361 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWhen substances are dissolved in a solvent they can become ionized and form weak bonds with the solvent which in this case is water which is a good solvent because it's molecules are polarized. The volume of the solution after it is mixed can be significantly less than the volumes of the solute and the solvent before they are mixed even though the weight is the same. Regardless of that, common sense would tell you that not all substances are the same density so you shouldn't expect two different substances of equal volume to weigh the same. When he says "2 unopened 12 ounce cans of cola weigh the same right?" he is trying to mislead you into believing that the cans are 12 ounces (weight) instead of 12 fluid ounces (volume).
By Blatzbaby 1232212524 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe sodas are of similar substance ie liquid, but due to molecular weight of ingredients, that explains the weight diff. although volume is same. Also shown with your example, the fluid oz designation does not refer to weight, but volume. Hence overall volume remains constant, weight varies.
By Kdubya 1232091329 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removedensity is the amount of mass divided by volume. since sugar adds to the mass, the regular cola is said to be denser than the diet cola.
By quaver_c 1232199062 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe regular cola will have long-chain sugar molecules such as starch and glucose (C6H12O6) in solution, raising its density, artificial sweetners such as fructose and sucrose are both shorter chain molecules and consequently less dense. Sucrose is also much sweeter than glucose so can be used more sparingly, hence it's commonly used in diet food lines as a sweetner.

Wow, this idiot totally failed... pretty much everything his teachers ever tried to tell him.
"They are both 12 ounces, right?"
Yeah, 12 FLUID ounces. Fl Oz is DIFFERENT than weight Oz.
Good video, good commentary, I learned more today.
By zarugby 1235061129 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeyou had two mistakes here. whether an object floats or sinks is totally based upon density, therefore two different sized objects that weigh exactly the same may have a different buoyancy.
Mistake number two, fluid ounces is a unit of volume, not a unit of weight. duh they are gonna be a different weight, they are the same size but they are different things, therefore they are gonna wight a different amount. fluid ounces =/= ounces. :D
Thanks.

I liked the video - interesting. However I LOVED all the debate that it sparked...... some people are just too smart :-)
By tramichele 1233841913 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethe diet might float because it has less soda in it.. just because it SAYS 12 ounces doesnt mean theres exactly 12 ounces in there
By Helltoad 1233541266 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removegonna drink pepsi cola or pepsi diet since there is a video commercial titled Now or Never! Pepsi Best Commerical on metacafe that proves drinking pepsi makes you GAY!!!!!

By Nickstar19 1233109525 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removedont alwasys weight the same as 12 ounces as far as mass goes
they should be the same wieght i gess but i jus care about the tast n calories lol
one thing you did not do is take out the liquid and weigh them in the same container seperatally of course. the can says FLUID OUNCES not OUNCES. the can should weight that difference.
By Supa_Man_999 1232353929 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removetwo things matter, the amount of carbonation and the density of the liquids. First, diet soda does not contain corn syrup, it usually contains either sucralose or saccarine. Pepsi has sucralose, which decreases the ability of the soda syrup to absorb the carbonation it also makes it less dense. Another thing the measurement of the cans is in fluid ounces which is slightly less than actual ounces and you scale measures actual ounces. Not less soda, just more released CO2 and less density, actually by volume diet soda cans have more soda syrup.
By enamus 1232223542 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethanks for sharing!
By jilanis 1232135586 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe 12 ounces listed on the cans refer to the fluid volume of the product, not the weight. Someone needs to go back to school to learn the difference.
By DMTW 1232069075 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI was wondering if anybody new that.

By 8leaf 1231895563 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removejust demonstates how our education system if failing. its a shame that its not better known that fluid ounces are a measurement of volume and not weight and when you add a substance with specific gravity greater than one to water, the volume of water mixture will now be heavier.
By jaxplane2 1231893192 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeis the preferred modern scientific term (rather than specific gravity). You're absolutely right, but this video is intended for a wide range of viewers...not just physics majors or professors. It's Metacafe, not a science journal. Thanks for watching and commenting though!
By greeenpro 1231895523 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIs indeed the generic term in use today but specific gravity is still the correct term when comparing water soluions. Im just a "mature" high school graduated, not physics major or professor.

Looks like your spelling and grammar could use some serious work...lol. (demonstates/ if ??)
Typographical error? Just a thought. I based my comment on the title. "Amazing cola myth buster". Surprising fact perhaps and i see no myth.
By jaxplane2 1231930400 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIf 1 can weighs more the the other that means the lighter can has more air in it so it floats.

By Raskarof 1232407972 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIs why one floats and the other doesn't.Regular has more volume, less air.Diet less volume and more air.Its under pressure and will spray out especially if shook up.

By joeyboy1991 1231914402 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveA fluid ounce is a measurement of volume, not weight. 16 fluid ounces = 1 pint. a fluid ounce of sugar takes up the same volume as a fluid ounce of water. an ounce is a measurement of weight. 16 ounces = one pound.
By SEAGYPSEA 1231911800 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveDissolving a substance in liquid also usually lowers the freezing point. Because more sugar is added to regular soda than artificial sweetener to diet cole, the freezing point of regular soda is lower. Diet soda will freeze before regular soda at the same temperature.
