  • KAMIKAZE MEANS DIVINE WINDS

It is in remembrance of the fail attempt by the Mongols
to invade Japan about a 1,000 years ago.

i still find it unreasonably dumb to have attaked america first especially when we had a binding treaty
but at the same time it got us to join the war and kick ass but we lost alot of men sadly.
the a bomb wouldve been launched at a better place because thousands of inocent japanese died.

The japanese were cut off from American oil and steel imports due to sanctions. To continue with expanding their empire, they decided to risk it all and attack to destroy the Pacific Fleet. With the Americans powerless in the Pacific, they would be free to take over the oil supplies and negotiate a treaty. They based this on the American form of government, which was to compromise {how unlike today.} The term "uncoditional surrender" must have come as a complete shock.

    • hmm

interesting but still it should have been thought out a little more on the japanese but at the same time alot of countries believed america was weak... so i dunno but they should have known that a country wouldnt just take thousands of casualties just to make a treaty the next day.

  • taranto

the japanese studied the battle of taranto (google it) and this gave the idea for the attack on pearl harbour. usa seems not to have studied it, big mistake imo. as jetsonix said from 7th december1941, the americans would win due to her mighty industrial power,eg. aircraft carriers built 1941-1945: japan 12 usa 85 usa in 1944 produced 134.000 aircraft, 148.000 tanks , 27 million tons of shipping, 1.2million vehicles and 42.000 heavy guns, now thats a GIANT ! if the invasion of okinawa was called off, i think the usa would just have waited for the atomic bombs to be ready and start dropping them (built by many different european scientists who fled europe before the war) spys from the los alamos (new mexico) manhatten project gave the atomic bomb secrets to the russians after the war. the german army came very close to defeating the russians in 1941, they defeated poland in 4 weeks, and defeating holland, luxemburg, belgium the british expiditionary force and france in 5 weeks is the greatest victory in the history of warfare. (imo). when it got that cold in russia that oil solidified in tanks and vehicles, even gun oil seized their guns, the german blitzkrieg stopped, some units were a mere 15 miles from the kremlin ! then a worse disaster happened to the german army: hitler sacked his generals and took personal control of the army. now he was a moron!! just imagine it, a corporal in charge of an army !!

    • I agree with most of what you said,

However, my great uncle Nisson, was one of the 8 scientists that constructed the first Atom bombs for the US. We already had most of the technology and schools of thought, but had not put the projects into practice until several engineers from Europe came over. It was inevitable that our Atomic project would have come to be even without help. Don't say we relied on the European's, that is completely untrue, and a common media spin. If anything they helped speed things up, and yes at the time they were a little further ahead in their research.

    • Atomic bomb

Another reason why the United States also dropped the atomic bomb was because it would have likely been the last time that they could test on live subjects on a mass scale - twice! They could have dropped one - out to sea and probably could have convinced Nippon to cease hostilities.

    • That is intersting

I do believe that the US tested out a bomb before dropping it on Hiroshima, though I don't recall exactly. It's an interseting notin to think that Japanese knowledge of a test of an atomic weapon would have produced a surrender. Too bad hind sight is 2020.

    • no....

manhattan project scientists scraped together just enough plutonium for the 2 bombs, little boy and fat man. the us was desperate to end the war, there is no way they would have wasted any pluto on a test.

  • Cold War Began before WWII Ended

As has been said by others, one of the reasons that the U.S. didn't stop at one bomb dropped on Japan was to demonstrate to Stalin that the U.S. had an arsenal and, equally important, the will to use it in wartime. In Europe, the same idea played into the firebombing of Dresden. Dresden was a sleepy little town with no strategic value, but look it up on a map... it's as close to Eastern Europe as the Eighth Air Force and, by night, RAF bombers could reach at the time (flying out of England). Like the Japanese, German civilians paid the price to send a message to Stalin.

The Emperor was warned that the nuke campaign would continue, city by city, but it was a bluff... the bombs weren't built yet, and Truman hoped that Japan would have had enough after two. As it turned out, Truman got lucky... it was just enough.

The Kamikaze were green kids who were browbeaten and intimidated into their missions by appealing to their sense of honour. They'd have served Japan better by living and contributing to the post-war rebuilding effort, but the wilful blindness of their high command condemned them.

    • dude yur wrong

America wasnt worried about stalin and the ruskies during WW2. The russians were flat broke, and had no army. H Truman considered stalin a "pompous airbag", to quote him late in life. He was actually more worried about euro reconstruction than anything...Oh and also the bombs were almost built, after they dropped Fat Man, scientists like seaborg and everyone at los alamos was working day and night on creating more plutonium for bombs, truman told them that they needed four more bombs, he thought, to end the war.

  • Ils sont fous ces japonais

Le seul pays au monde a avoir compris comment se comporter avec les japonais, c est les USA. 2 bombes atomiques dans la gueule calment bien des ardeurs et remettent les idées en place pour longtemps, voire pour toujours.

  • The real story

I am going to be honest with you; allmost all people understand the definition of a kamikaze wrong. Well not the definition actually, but they all believe thery are evil just because they kill theirselves and thats it. WRONG! They kill theirselves for what they believe. Now if what they believe is wrong, thats a different thing neither us neither some smart'ol politician can decide. But if you ask me, terorrists are fighting for the wrong cause as lons as their reasons are besed on revendge, death and the destruction of others. But not because they are killing theirselves. Just that they are doing it to kill others. Wanted to make sure I also point that out...

  • No you are wrong

It's not matter of time but matter of lives. 30 ships is lots of death. If all the ships are sunken that would be 200+ ships there are thousands of soliders onborad . If they had sunken all of them United states will be short of men and the history would be different. Japan would probably keep on fighting for another couple years or maybe even stand still today as an axis power. And you said Japs are not smart then how come Pearl hurbor was bombed with torpedos which Americans believe was impossible to be used in shallow places and germans they got the first V-weapons and the best tank during that time. American and Russia captured German scientists to built atomic bombs. So learn more before you speak kid.

It was due to mounting casualties of US forces faced with this kind of warfare that the A-bomb was dropped on Japan.

    • That was not my point.

My point was that this type of warfre had such a massive impact on the course of the war. It was something that nobody had been prepared for.

No civilian should be targetted, whatever the side. The japs targetted hospital ships and look into the way they treated the families they captured at the fall of Singapore. Neither side deserves any credit for targetting civilians.

..out of 2000 attempts ... that's a 10% success rate...not bad. I have a piece of a Kamakazi plane on my mantle. My Brother-n-law got to be an eye witness at that battle. Consider the casualties taking Okinawa and you see what the A-Bomb was a rather humane way to end that war. Now, if only we had the balls we could end the next war in the same manner.

the usa lost 295.000 men in a war declared on the usa by japan and germany. i am glad that a democracy developed atomic weapons first. the main reason hiroshima and nagasaki were bombed was to show stalin not to screw with western europe. dresden and berlin were the original targets ,but the bomb wasnt ready yet. dresden had the hell bombed out of it by the usaaf and the raf just before the russians got there,to show stalin what the allies can do, stalin was as bad or worse then hitler, luckily neither had atomic weapons first

    • no comparison

Stalin was not worse than Hitler, no two ways about it. Was Stalin a cold-blooded killer on a massive scale? Yes. Was Hitler? Yes. The difference between them was their reasons. Stalin forced his country into hyper -industrialization to prevent exactly what almost happened {the conquering of Russia by another European power.} Stalin did his job, even if he was a freaking paranoid/ delusional pshyco. Hitler, on the other hand, killed for his ideals of the "Aryan race". The far greater evil lays in the one who kills for their chosen group, clear as day.

    • Hiroshima and Nagasaki...

...were the two largest individual terrorist acts ever performed in the 20th century, and they were carried out by the 'heroes' of the war. Harry Truman was even lied to so that he would authorize the drops; he thought that the targets were fully military and that there would be extremely minimal civilian casualties.

Note this: You pointed out that the USA lost 295,000 men. They did, that is true, but they were also all soldiers. The two atomic bombs killed more than 170,000 CIVILIANS immediately, and Japan is still feeling the effects from the two bombs even today.

    • Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic horror e...

jm not sayingi i agree with it,just what and why it happened. this what i posted in another forum last year::

japan was not the intended target of the atomic bombs, berlin and probably dresden(another axis city untouched by bombing) were.
the atomic bomb not being available, dresden was bombed by 1300 english and american bombers before the russians arrived. take note of the last sentence of this memo
      (1) Internal Royal Air Force memo (January, 1945)

Dresden, the seventh largest city in Germany and not much smaller than Manchester, is also far the largest unbombed built-up the enemy has got. In the midst of winter with refugees pouring westwards and troops to be rested, roofs are at a premium. The intentions of the attack are to hit the enemy where he will feel it most, behind an already partially collapsed front, to prevent the use of the city in the way of further advance, and incidentally to show the Russians when they arrive what Bomber Command can do.

      http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/2WWdresden.htm

in january 1945, the russian army consisted of 10.500.000 men including 6.000.000 combatants,500 divisions supported by 29.500 tanks,109.000 heavy guns and 15.000 aircraft(i dont know the v.e. day figures, but probably more) under the control of stalin, another cruel dictator.
he was being informed about the manhatten project by his spies, and maybe this prompted him to respect the allied agreement on the zones of occupation in germany, and see what became of the manhatten project . the first bomb test "trinity" left him unimpressed,it could have just been a big pile of tnt set off in the desert.

,a bomb dropped in tokyo bay or in the sea around japan, could look like a ammunition ship exploding http://www.ussbush.com/slotow.htm ,
(anyone have rhe film of it ?) so the us decided to bomb hiroshima and nagasaki to show the russians that it was small enough to be delivered by an aircraft and that they had more then 1. this made stalin realize war with usa and britian would be suicide for the ussr

with no atomic weapons , i believe stalin would have overun western europe with his superior armour, massive air force and 500 divisions of combat experienced troops, costing the lives of millions more and the war would go on and on for years.
before ww2 started, stalin was more feared then hitler and lenin stated the whole world must be communist. British, French and Americans had already been at war with the communists during the russian civil war, the allies invaded russia http://www.regiments.org/wars/20ww1/russia.htm and he may have wanted to continue the quest for world communisim

in ww2 all bombing raids were like terrorist attacks in a march 1945 raid on tokyo almost 17 square miles of the city were reduced to ashes. Estimates of the number killed range between 80,000
