By Al_Kokone 1157578172 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeits neat how they sink water and raise it up again for the ships... i read about it somewhere but never actually saw it...
By NationalPro 1157585353 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removein Malaysia you can take a boat ride from inside the shopping mall and then the boats take you into a lake were they used to gather metal from, and yes you do go through a water lock! but i dont really se any point for a water lock.
By hard_not_tough 1157776428 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHey you need locks to go from one Ocean to the other. Educate yourself fully silk. Oh and by the way the Panama Canal is the more efficient way to go from the Pacifi to the Atlantic and viceversa. Locks are there because water levels are DIFFERENT in each Ocean. arg....
By KaluaBacardi 1157862921 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveSo much for the idea of water finding its own level. Going have to throw out my spirit level now.
By Tapeworm 1159720317 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveTry listening to tapeworm. Ever heard the term SEA LEVEL being used before? Not only are you wrong, but you ridicule somebody else in a most arrogant fashion that makes yourself look idiotic beyond words. All sea is the same level, have you ever been in a boat and gone up a hill? Locks are there to transport ships from the sea to man made water, which is often at a lower or higher level. Go and read some books that aren't the Bible.
By Cambridgeman 1160610977 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThere is a difference in the sea level between Pacific and Atlantic, a difference of 24 cm on average at the point of the Pamama canal. This difference is partly why the sea is so treacherous off Cape Horn. However the primary purpose of the locks on the canal is ofcourse to go up hill to lake Gatun and then down hill again.
By wig1 1160923260 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeyou said: Locks are there to transport ships from the sea to 'MAN MADE WATER'
last part is wrong cause the lakes in south Canada/NorthUS are natural lakes and still need locks because of the level difference :D
actually not all seas are the same level...the Dead Sea is BELOW sea level.
By SteveJS 1165765216 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt seems that the actual ocean level is the lower level on the left, but they had to raise the other side to make it safer for big ships? I can`t think of another reason why they would do it. What do u think?
By BRgdr 1160196138 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI am panamanian and live 10 minutes away from the miraflores locks and 15 minutes from the Pedromiguel Locks. I have seen this many times since i was a kid, and still amazes me every time i go by. Sometimes on saturdays i ride my harley on the bulevar that goes in front of that part of the canal and it s a sweet ride. I invite anyone to come to Panama, visit my coutry, the canal, beautiful beches, Tropical Jungle, very modern city with fine clubes, banks, hotel etc.

By Swanie 1157677231 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt is really impressive to see it in person. I was on board the container vessel Clipper Amaryllis and we departed from Canada all the way to Italy. The whole voyage lasted 35 days in total including the 24 hours passing from Panama Canal. We went into the tanks at first "climbing" up to the lake in daylight and we went down to the sea from the lake through the tanks on the other side of Atlantic into the sea at 02:00. It is a great experience and I was glad I saw the whole procedure. Just another comment is about the small wagons on the rails which they drag the ship. The operator must be very experienced otherwise the whole wagon can be de-railed into the tanks as it happens in the past and even now sometimes.

By Goffery 1157588583 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt takes simply form the time in screen between 8-12 Minutes each ship not 679.371.....that is wrong calculations dude. dont be smart ass.
Obviously its few minutes not 33 min in minimum, otherwise it will pass only 23 ships in this clip (11 hours, 42 minutes).
Too much going on, what to look at..
By Deodorant 1157578154 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeamazing, if it weren't boats... ={)
By Ronod the Hero 1157570122 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewithout the tugboats that work in there, I count 23 ships @ 12 hr
--> 46 ships per day.
Very interesting.
The average is 30 vessels per day, And A cruise ship ike the Raphsody of the seas Has to pay approx $165,000 to pass through.
By dont believe a word 1157568859 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHow much time to lift up the ships and open the gates.
By Mathslim 1157556349 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt appears that the time lapse begins at 10:17:39 and ends somewhere around 21:59:40. That is 11 hours 42 minutes and 1 second or 42121 seconds. The vid is 62 seconds long so 1 second of this vid would equal 679.371 seconds real time. It appears from the vid that it takes anywhere from 3 to 5 seconds from the time the lock closes for it to fill or purge the water and the ship to begin to move out. So for a 3 second cycle you have 3 x 679.371 = 2038.113 seconds real time which is 33 minutes 58.113 seconds. For a 5 second cycle you have 5 x 679.371 = 3396.86 seconds real time which is 56 minutes 36.86 seconds. If my math is correct that would give you a rough estimate of the time it takes. I don't understand why it takes longer sometimes than others and I'm sure you could get a better estimate by going to wikapedia and looking up the canal for info, but obviously I prefer to do things the hard way. ;-)
By Rugger 1157575480 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeall you have to do is pause the video before each ship enters, look at the time. then, pause the video again when the ship, look at the time again and calculate the difference. voila.

By giggler 1157586587 Reply Spam [-2] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei've sailed thru the panama canal as an engineer on one of those ships its amazing the size of ship that can fit thru the canal. the ship also has to be centered in the lock using steel cables that are attached to trains that run along side the ship as there is only about a foot clearance between the ship and the wall
