What a loss. He was an inspiration to so many people, especially kids. Who knows how many decided to become veterinarians or something similar just because of his phenominal love and devotion. I always feared something like this would happen, but I still find myself shocked and deeply saddened. Rest in peace, Steve. You did a great job and you will be missed. :(

he was the best there was, the best there will be anyone can sit and criticise him as much as u want but the fact is the man did so much selflessly for nature and the animals , he was not a star never wanted to be one , was just like u and me but energy and the charisma he had is hard to replace. He certainly deserved better but such is life cannot fight destiny maybe god needed him more than we all did my heart goes out his family and kids may god bless them all and steve u were a true human being its because of u guys worls becomes a better place to live in take care mate !!!

Even when he got hurt, Steve never held anything against the animals. He was one of the only people for centuries to care for animals in such a way, that he would even risk his life to teach people about them.

Yeah this was a person that was able to show us that crocodiles might be touched as "friendly" animals. And no tonly crocs. Spiders, snakes, fishes - everything.

He was a great educator and conservationist of wildlife. But I tell you what. It`s easy to protect indigenous Australian animals when people don`t really need them, because there is mass domestication and factory farming of other animals everywhere in the world, Australia included. You cannot stand up for indigenous animals and ignore the horrific circumstances of imported domesticated animals. Most farm animals whose meat and milk we buy from the supermarket spend their entire lives in a tiny little cage where they can`t even turn around. Cows are kept pregnant all the time to produce milk, and they hardly ever get to feed their own calves. Very very sick, unhealthy stuff. I wish there had been some Steve Irwin-like activists in Europe and Asia when people started to turn animals into lifeless factory machines.

For all the years that I've seen Steve Irwin trying to make us understand the nature better I say thank you! I don't usually care about the celebreties that pass away ... but know i fell that this man made a difference ..... let's hope that .... he didn't die for nothing, let's hope that we understand nature a bit more because of him. THE Crocodile Man, Steve Irwin, is dead. He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It appeared that he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest, Queensland Police Inspector Russell Rhodes said.
He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas where he had been filming an underwater documentary when it occurred.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.
Mr Irwin, 44, was killed just after 11am, Eastern Australian time.
