The UK and USA were going to build massive aircraft carriers out of pykrete (a mix of ice and sawdust as hard as concrete) to launch B29S against Japan. This plan was amazing and for real.
We attack! with our army of flaming snowman paratroopers!

Interesting idea, but the Allies were winning by that time and it was passed over for more conventional weapons systems. Melting would eventually be an issue no matter what refrigeration they had on board. Think of the poor crew... would YOU want to freeze your nards off sleeping belowdecks with walls of prefab-ice? It'd be more to the point to tow huge chunks of flat arctic pack ice into the trans-Atlantic convoy routes. With prepared runway surfaces and simple fuel caches, they could keep patrol reconaissance aircraft and anti-sub bombers chasing the U-boats away for a fraction of the cost of building a carrier.
By Boy Willie 1168930203 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveActually regular ice wouldn't work as it is less stable and can break under its own weight where as pykrete wouldn't. One of the original ideas was building a carrier out of ice but regualr ice didn't fit the needs, thats when they found pykrete.
By what was that? 1170392276 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYo, I think that these would be usefull not as Long lasting Weapons platforms but as like Disposable ships, IE: For covert ops, forget rafts, drive your boat ashore, and then just let it melt, It would be amazing, or as like boats for storming beaches (I realise that they have hover crafts for this now). IE: Normandy, It's not like they're going to reuse those beach landers, and if the ice is so strong maybe it'll stop bullets. But like for landing craft, Just pop another Boat out of the giant ICE cube tray. lol
By Deathcapt 1166724259 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemovePsst... I think they were suggesting to simply build the _hull_ out of the stuff, which has some key features worth noting:
The hull would be hollow, i.e., more buoyant than an iceberg (/duh).
Crew/equipment would be above the buoyant (internally cooled) hull.
Prolly didn't make it cause the Americans/Brits had already deforested their countries... hence the meeting in Canada? :D
Actually, from a strategic point of view, it's better to have lots of small ones, than one big huge (target) one.
How come no one has ever come up with any othe (peace time) applications e.g. giant refrigerators, space labs, beer coolers, etc.??
was becoz of massive production of airplanes late during the war. Have you watched the special on it?
By FlyingStorm 1165951430 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethe reason that the pycrete ships were never built was that after hitler built one, it got too hot and melted and also when it was cold they would'nt melt! that was a big problem with these fleet of giant ice ships!!! what was highly successful however were pycrete 'lighter than air' airships or deridgibles as church hill called them. these gigantic flying icebergs were so light that 90% of them was hidden above the clouds!!!! I know all this stuff because i am a teenager and I know everything about everything!!!even my mom says so so shut up! Later they made things with blueberries and they called it blueberrypiecrete and apple and also pumpkin. the pumpkin was the strongest as it is the most similar in color to sawdust...everbody shot their guns at it and everybody else got ricochet bulltes to the knee.
By CKirk 1166216366 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeto make all those planes? Hmmm I'm not convinced that nothing else would have come out of this incredible stuff... chill out lounges in the Sahara, mobile airports in the Atlantic, party platforms in the Mediterranean...? Naaah
By NotImpressed 1165967824 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThere could be many uses for this stuff.
However, what is the temperature of this? Colder than normal ice? A question would be (even if pykrete was as cold as normal ice) how could the crew survive in a freezing environment for months at a time, or even years as stated in the video?
Also, what about matenince? What would the crew do if something broke? Or the crew quaters: the running water would freeze...?
How about hockey rinks, ice skating rink, car testing tracks, natural habitat for penguins and polar bears in zoos, chill out stations in the sahara, ... I came up with this in just a few minutes. What is the owner of the Pykrete patent thinking about? Also... they make this carrier look like its carved out of a solid chunk of Pykrete... well if you compare with an iceberg, only 10% rises above the surface - that's a hell of a lot of drag below the water line!! C'mon... not one single practical application? They're just pulling our legs
By NotImpressed 1163766914 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveCouple things in my mind
1. What about napalm XD
2. How the h*** would they keep runway "clean"? Because if it rains there is 2 possibilities 1. the ship melts 2. the water freezes in to the runway.
2 words, Big Zambonies.
By blahh123456 1161235407 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe carriers were going to be used in the arctic, therefore, it would not rain, it would snow, and snow can be brushed off.
By KTrace 1161572429 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removegood points maxtron, nalpalm was invented by the usa during the ww2,the axis didnt have it.
the runway would have been covered with wood (like all us carriers duing ww2) which would stop melting / freezing problem. too bad they didnt build one, see how it went in combat or when decommissioned fire torpedos at its 40ft thick hull and see what happens
that would be 1 of the greatest inventions on all time but if we used it now idiots would decide 2 nuka it unless they let out a barrage of SCUDS or TOMAHAWKS
then yes maybe but they would nuke it otherwise
i think they r preparing for the WW3
By Mike Bita 1158067209 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI thought we had enought problems with our icecaps melting...never mind these massive chunks.
By Fonax 1158021140 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethey said it cant melt got pipes and S**t in it makeing it everlaating, biatch :P heeheh

By bentan 1158034928 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIf pykrete is part ice, would the aircrafts be able to take off with their regular wheel(s)? Wouldn't they just slip and slide like regular ice???
By C_hot 1164243044 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI think they'd lay down a runway like any other carrier, notice the top of the ship simulations are a different color?
By common_sense 1164797939 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI WANT TO INFORM U PEOPLE THAT THE USA DIDNT SUCCEED TO MAKE THIS SHIP BECAUSE AFTER SOME WEEKS OF BUILDING IT THEY REALIZED IT WAS... MELTING!(HISTORICAL EVENT)
By hainis 1162372098 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWas becozit was late during the war and the US decided to produce massive amounts of planes instead and budgets.
By FlyingStorm 1165951528 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThey should add more land mass to alaska by building this. LOL Then they wouldnt need no pipes to keep it cool.
By FlyingStorm 1165951940 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveMountbatten and Churchill.. ..Brits. ..get your facts straight
By white trash 1164924684 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveMaybe it is a super secret, but the amount of heat this ship would emit from the crew alone, not to mention the natural heat from the engines, turbines and even ordinary lightbulbs would braodcast its presence long before it could deploy its fighter payload. Either the ship would have to open all of the hatches to allow the heat and CO out (creating jets of heat easily detectable from high flying aircraft), or they would have to have "ship weather" where they would open one part of the ship - creating gale force winds as the heat whooshed from compartment to compartment - to nuetralize the pressure difference! insane!
