The cage collapses because it is being held open and Square by hi right hand.
You notice he doesn't move it from hand to hand? When he releases it with his right hand, it collapses and is yanked under his jacket by a black elastic band that is stretched tight before he walks out on the staqge. You will only, ever see this trick done as the first thing the magician does. One of the oldest tricks in the world. They don't do it with a live bird in the cage either.
