  I'd argue that's more of a psychological problem. It's not fair to assume that those things are simply due to the presence of firearms in American society - although I share your concerns for the sheer number and easy availability of firearms. A knowledge of firearms actually makes you respect and understand them aswell as their dangers more clearly.

  It's not really appropriate or safe to teach a child of that age to use a firearm (especially one of such a callibur as an M60) - however you've got to bear in mind shooting, or more specifically target shooting, can be a sport, hobby and recreation as well as simply for the purposes of combat or violence.
