Sulfuric acid is added to sugar. The acid dehydrates the sugar and results in a large tower of carbon. Water is also released in the form of steam.

  • Questions???

How long since the acid is added to the sugar does it take to form the tower of carbon and how much acid is added to how much sugar to form this?
Cool experiment. If only I had known this I wouldn´t have failed Chem.

    • Volume and Time

The exact amount of sulfuric acid is not very important. I just cover the sugar until the layer of acid on top is a cm or two deep.

The time to for the reaction to start is about 3 mins, but once it starts it grows as fast as shown on the video.
