  • The commentator is full of shit....

    1. She got a good 720 spin because of a line twist. So instead of a head on opening AWAY from the tower, the canopy opened facing TO the tower. Since she is on her way out of a spin, she is dissorientated and don't have time to avoid the impact.

    2. There was probably no "blast of wind" that slammed her into the tower. If there was strong winds at the time she jumped, her canopy picked up the wind speed leading to a harder impact. That is the actual speed of the canopy moving forward wind speed and that tower is not going anywhere.

    3. Why the hell would they both fall "if her chute tears"? The crewman is secured in a rope, not her frigging base rig. Geesh...

    It was a good thing she used a helmet that covers her face because that didn't look good :/

      nsfw, my comment wasn't directed at you, judging from your first comment, i presumed that you had/have some knowledge of skydiving as you talk about 720 spin and line twists. I just thought you'd see the funny side of my comment. Canopy, not "Chute" is something my CCI (club chief instructor) used to drum into us while doing AFF.... :)

      I thought it was poor grammar. Didn't catch the Chute/Canopy thing because I don't live in a english speaking country so it's lost in translation I guess. But I get it now :)

      I do remember that my CCI told us we have two options: Plan A and Plan B. "Stick to plan A and if that fails go for plan B. Deviations from these plans are not handled in this course" :D (Roughly translated).

    So why would you base jump off the side that the wind is blowing towards?

    Later in the clip you see the nice open park area where she could have jumped to. And since all the jumpers later jumped from around the tower, it's not like she had to use the point she launched from.

    A could example of the dumb animals fall into the tarpit.

    • Because

      you basically want to land facing the wind. Just like airplanes do. They either land against the wind or in cross winds, never with the wind. Basejumps like these don't give you much time to land in any other angle than straight ahead from the tower. Jump, pull, aim, flare, land :)

      You also want to jump off facing the wind, because unlike jumping from an airplane, you don't have any relative wind to "fly" on. You have to pick up speed maneuver (spell check) with your arms and legs. You can see her tracking away from the tower before opening her chute. If the canopy had opened like it should, this video would never been seen here on Metacafe.

      The other jumpers probably jumped from the same exit point, if the wind was coming from the same direction. The difference is probably that their canopies opened head on like they should.

That was awesome, and I'm glad she's okay. Foolish are those who try this underprepared or without safty (like the crew who flung themselves off the cable brigde in Tampa Florida)
