There are over 70 species of Rays. Just for everyones info. They are all harmless, apparently Steve had it cornered and she felt threatened. That is the only reason for them to strike. or unless you step on one.
I know someone that got stung in the islands ,and it was cuz this idiot speared one! He got hit in the arm and was transported to a hospital by helo,almost lost his arm!

sting rays dont have spines on the end of their tails!
It's a cluster of multiple spines at the BASE of their tails. the ends of their tails are too blunt to penetrate skin. They aren't like scorpions which arch their tails. These guys barbs were designed to ward off sharks, which search for food on the bottom by running their faces right next to the floor, where the stingray can whip its ass sideways and thrust the barbs into its nose
this video is complete bullshit. trust me. ive worked with stingrays before at seaworld.

I've been diving for over a third of my life, and I've never known a stingray to exhibit any such behaviour - the barb is purely a defence mechanism, and curving the tail up like that isn't just random.
The animal must have been distressed - and knowing Steve, with his child-like passion for animals (sometimes a good thing, sometimes not), I find it hard to believe that this is how it occured. They ray must have felt cornered in one way or another; whether due to too many people, or Steve's molesting tactics.

The tip of the Stingray will not kill him , and also its not the 2 barb from the bottom of the tail < that is where u can tell sex of the stingray > The stingray have a unicque defance that is a 2 spike ontop of the tail not the end but at between the body and the tail just where the tail start. That spike is down if it's not in danger but it will be pointing up and that can puncture your flesh easily .. that is what hit late Mr Irwin on the chest .. so bo becarefull.
