  • Nice flyby but not supersonic

    Two reasons that easily come to mind. Firstly, if the plane is flying faster than the speed of sound, you don't hear it coming. Secondly, if it were flying faster than Mach 1, the shockwave (sonic boom) at that distance would knock over everybody in the crowd and they would all have major hearing damage. But still a cool vid.

      True this is not a supersonic flyby, But this is an incorrect statement. But still a cool vid.) The shockwave would knock over anyone in the crowd. Hearing damage more than likely, but I am sure they would have been supplied with some form of ear plugs.

      Its illegal for any aircraft to break the sound barrier at an airshow in the united states...EXCEPT for at the Edwards AFB Open House where, its broken almost every day, even during the airshows

      it was already at mach 1 before this fly-by... notice the that it becomes almost silenced wen he is next to the camera... mach 1 is faster then the sound and that was he at this moment...

      The "boom" doesn't just happen as the aircraft passes through the sound barrier. The cone of sound created by the aircraft extends backwards from just in front of the nose of the plane and is always present as long as the aircraft is traveling faster than Mach 1. You hear the boom as the cone passes over you. So if you and I were standing a mile apart, one of us would hear the shockwave before the other as the plane passes above us.

    It's against regs to fly supersonic at airshows. As soon as I saw the crowd, I knew it was a subsonic flight.

    F/A 18s are probably the best sounding American fighter plane. As they come upon you at speed, there is a distinct "whooop", then you hear the engine noise.

    DragonFyre is right, the crowd would be knocked down. If you ever hear the sound barrier being broken, you cannot possibly mistake it. It's like having a bomb explode nearby. There is a TREMENDOUS "BOOM", and everything gets smacked by the shockwave.

      .98 mach does not count, it is illeagal for any aircraft to travel over mach speed in populated places unless express permisson is granted.
