Kuzguncuk lies on the Asian side of the Bosporus Strait. There is a church, a mosque, and a synagogue, right beside each other. The priest of the Armenian Orthodox Church, using a key made in 1835, opens the doors to a Christian world within a Muslim one. The priest is one of a few who come from another part of Istanbul to serve the faithful. And when he says faithful, he is referring to Jews and Muslims, as well as Christians, who enter this holy place to pray.

  • that's not an example of tolerance.

it's an example of indifference but almost the same thing.

    • Indifference would be if

they ignored each other. This is tolerance. The Muslims use the Christain church and the Christains permit it. The one guy said they patronize each others businesses in order to help the local economy. If they were indifferent, they wouldn't care what happened to each other's businesses.

So, why do we find it so hard to be this tolereant and respectful of each other's religion elsewhere in the world? As the priest said, "it is one god just different paths."

    • tolerance is only a reality if their is ...

I don't believe that somebody believeing in a different god than you is something to tolerate- it's none of your business what religion someone is. I believe in no god, does that mean that my friendships between me and my religious(sikh, muslim, christian, rastafarian) friends is based on tolerance? what have i got to tolerate? it's indifference my friend. No hostility here by the way, just discussion.

  • thats nothing (compared to this)

in Andalusia (spain when it was ruled by muslim arabs) muslims went for friday prayer in a mosque, and on saturday, jews went to worship in that same mosque, and on sunday, christains would go to do their prayer... all in the same mosque.

and when other countries invaded Andalusia, (because it was the most modern country in the world, with all science travelling from baghdad, the ''capital of science'' at that time, to qurtoba, the capital of andalusia.) Jews would send their young men to fight side by side with the muslims.

however, when Andalusia fell, all the jews went to morroco, and now they are in israel..

  • They do not have tolerance, they beheade...

Just joking I have been there and it is a very beautiful country. I hope I can go again before it becomes super conservative like the rest of the Muslim world.
