- He is not biting them
He is just cleaning his nails, there is dirt that collects from the litter right under the curve of the nail, and the only way to get it out is by doing what he is doing. Even if the nails were cute, he would still need to clean them. Plus they like when their nailed are pulled gently, it's a kind of a muscle stretch for them!

He needs his nails trimmed! If you've never done it then get your vet to show you how, and buy the correct clippers, don't use human ones. My cat does this when her dew claws get too long - they get really shapr and curved begin to poke the paw pads. He's biting them off because it hurts...
