WRONG!
It bugs me to know end when 'experts' can't even get it right. Grilling is direct, high, heat with the grill open. BBQing is NOT smoking! BBQing is direct, medium heat, lid closed (and can be .5 hours+, not this <15 minutes!). Smoking is what he called BBQing. I'd like to see somone have a BBQ at a foot ball game for 20+ hours!!

  it has to do with the temperature. Grilling is high-heat so the cooking is done only with the direct heat (think "flame grilled"). BBQing is at a medium heat, and is more a combo of direct heat and "baking" (thus with the lid down). Whether the lid is up or down is just a by-product.

So what do you call the thing that uses charcoal under a metal grill (sorry - can't think of another word) - the kind of thing most people have on their decks?

- Just watch...
  In the video, at around 0:40, he says "whether you're using a propane grill or a charcoal kettle grill" and a picture of one example of each type of grill is displayed.
  
  Actually, let me just sum it up like he did: if it uses a direct heat source (like charcoal) designed for quick cooking, it's a grill. If it uses an indirect heat source with wood smoke for long-term cooking, it's a BBQ.
  
  If I haven't explained things clearly enough, just watch/listen to the video again, he does a better job than I do.
