Ok first of all... when hybrids are formed they are polyploidy.. i .e they have more than 2 sets of chromosomes.. dats why they cannot mate with another tiger or a lion (i.e their parent species).. also during speciation.. difffernt species cannot or maynot (there are exceptions) naturally mate due to various reproductive barriers. There are two types of reproductive barriers. 1. Prezygotic 2. Post zygotic. the first one won't let the two species (in this case the liger and the parent) due to habitat isolation, temporal isolation (time of breeding), mechanical isolation (gene incompatibility). In post zygotic, there are a couple.. the offspring are sterile and viable (they wont survive), even if they do later on they will tend to breakdown..
so here is the question..
If the two animals (liger and tiger or lion) were to be able to mate, with none of the reproductive barriers affecting the process, would a new species arise? the answer is no. As long as the specie is mating with with parent specie no.. as soon as it starts mating with itself then yes, a new specie has taken life... now that would be interesting.. because if we look at evolution, no new species has come into existance for a long long time. If we follow the theory of punctuated equillibrium, we can say one of the following:
1. There are evolutionary changes taking place but just that they are genotipic and are just not significant enough to show.
2. The time that has elapsed so far is no where near enough for a species to evolve.
if we say the second one, one is going to face a lot of contradiction because there are othe factors also.. again this is textbook knowledge.. what happens in reality.. who knows? maybe we were not smart enough to pick out the evolutionary changes.. or just that there have been some and the books haven't been updated yet...

simply amazing... the size and majesty of this beast is wonderful. I would love to work with these animals. Also the affection they show to the handler (Dr) and each other is touching. I've been reading about this one on a zoology web site. When the scientists are naming the new hybrid breeds, the name usually always starts with the father of the progeny, then the mother. Tigons used to be a more prevalent hybrid in the 30's and from pictures are way different then ligers sporting different dominating features. Also, It has been recently found that it was much easier to naturally mate a male lion with a female tiger than the reverse wich at most times had to be done artificially.
