Instead, the general consensus among more informed observers is that Iran's new fighter is a modified F-5E Tiger II fighter. the F-5E was an early 1970s era low-cost export fighter update of the 1960s-era F-5A fighter/ T-38 supersonic trainer, and it proved very popular with US allies. While Northrop Grumman's F-5 page doesn't mention Iran as an F-5 customer, the Shah's air force most certainly was.

Twin tails, wings mounted above the intakes with the addition of leading edge strakes, and new avionics would appear to be the major modifications. The reports were careful not to tout new engines or the ability to fire medium-range missiles, for instance, and barring Russian assistance a radar that would be on par with even the AN/APG-65 of the 1980s vintage F/A-18As is highly unlikely.

    Americans, like the pre-WWII French, just can't conceive of getting thier asses kicked but it's happened every time a real enemy showed up. The Germans kicks our asses in WWII, just like the Japanese did. Then the Russian MIGs kicked out asses in North Korea, then again in Viet Nam. Get real. The truth is our aircraft S**k Check out the SU-35. Even the Indian AF kicked our asses in the 2008 "Red Flag"games. The judges said that for the Indians, it was "...like clubbing baby seals...". Wake up. Iran may well have some SU aircraft too, we don't know. We do know it won't be a walkover like Iraq. And Iran can and will attack the mainland U.S. with it's subs and missiles. We KNOW we'll lose the majority of ships in the Straits too. Your enthusiam won't stop a bullet or a torpedo or a cruise missile or a small pocket nuke either. You people are fools.

    No one will know how successful the Saegheh will be until Bush's handlers instigate direct conflict with Iran.

    It is far more important that Iran exercise real sovereignty by sourcing and producing its own armaments. Too many countries have sold their sovereignty by taking the easy route of buying arms from other nations.

    Iranians should be proud of their home-grown Saegheh fighter, even if it is a redesign of the F-5 Tiger II.

      and neither did the sopwith camel the p51 mig 15 and f86 sabre. it was a great plane forty years ago. a low cost export, the modifications on it will probably increase its ability, but to compare it to the newer fighters or for that matter even the f15 generation of fighters (russian or american) is just silly. andhow can they tell the performanceof it? the americans designed it. a modification will not help it against newer jets or the yanks would have done that years ago.

      It probably is a nice plane to fly. The f5e that it was derived from sure was.

      But it should be renamed to whatever the word for "TARGET" is because its life will be measured in seconds in a dogfight with any modern American, European, or Russian Fighter.

      Be proud of it if you want. It is pretty.

      But any Pilot going up against a truly modern fighter in that thing needs to be given the last rites or whatever Islam does for those who are about to die a futile death.
