The F-111 was a multipurpose tactical fighter bomber capable of supersonic speeds. The aircraft was one of the more controversial aircraft ever to fly, yet it achieved one of the safest operational records of any aircraft in USAF history and became a highly effective all-weather interdiction aircraft.

  • Fuel Dump

    The flame is the result of fuel being dumped from a nozzle between the two engine exhaust. apparently discovered by accident by some american pilots as the commentator states. the featured aircraft is the Australian upgraded version. the fuel is dumped in emergency procedures or for airshows. Brisbane has a festival every year, with fireworks and two fly bys by the F111's, at night it is truely impressive. I might edit my footage down and post some, it's not very good footage, but you get the idea...

      It's actually designed to dump fuel in an emergency. Almost all Boeing and Airbus Industrie aircraft have this. Some fighters (mil peeps help me out here) jettison external fuel tanks but do what we do in the B737-NG's - hold burn - larger aircraft such as the B747-X have fueld dumping. Any Airbus pilots help me out here also?

      only an emergency for us wimpy Yankees. It can provide a spcectaclular flame when ignited but it is frowned upon and American aviators are discouraged from the use in air shows. Sorry but we save everything for real life.
