  there is all kinds of misguided nonsense in this thread so i'll clarify. The display is chaff/flare, chaff is shards of metal sent out to deter radar guided missiles and flares are sent out to deter heat seeking missiles. Normally this is done in a more subtle manner. A pilot will fire one tube at a time and it will be chaff or flare not normally both. This is an airshow stunt and yes the purpose is to use flares to create a smoke pattern of an angel.
