The American Arms M2 machinegun, commonly called the American 180 because the original prototype magazine held 180 rounds, uses .22LR (Long Rifle) ammunition. .22LR is commonly available in sporting goods stores for about $10 per 500 round package. The firearms in this video (actually, 2 different videos clipped together) each have an optional 275 round magazine. Other magazines include 165, 177 (original production) and 220 round versions. The gun fires at approximately 1200 rounds per minute (20 rounds per second). Reloading each drum is time consuming and tedious, although there are a number of loaders available which make the task easier.

Originally manufactured during the 1970's in Austria and later in the U.S., the gun was never a commercial success. However, it was employed as a prison guard gun and by some pther Law Enforcement Agencies. The only known firing of an America 180 in the line of duty was in Florida, where a Law Enforcement Officer fired an unknown number of rounds into the car door of a fleeing suspect. Reportedly the suspect ceased fleeing immediately, but was not hit nor injured.

These days The American 180 is actually quite rare and expensive - there are perhaps 200 possessed lawfully in the US, although the exact number is not known. Possession is highly regulated by the National Firearms Act of 1934, and penalites for unlawful possession include up to 10 years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines.

. . . at an Ohio shoot called Bulletfest. Fun to watch, but the minigun and the various select-fire weapons were much cooler. .22 is rather boring in any form. I'd rather keep my good ol' $300 AK-47 and $800 AR-15 than spend thousands on that thing. Aimed fire is more fun than automatic fire anyway.

I have sort of come in at then end of theses comments .. missed the African thing etc etc etc ad infinitum .... but I was born in the UK .. lived for a considerable time in the USA and now reside in China (PRC) ... I loved all these countries for all their faults etc .... here in China, there are lots of things you cannot do ... but, everyone smiles, is polite, works hard, no crime, no obeseness, everyone gets 3 weeks vacation a year , no one starves .... so ?? not really a comment, just an observation.
