  • The pilot was fighting a heavy tailwind ...

    He came in just a little too low, and his left rear wheel got caught in the safety net. When he tried to back up to unstick it, the wheel stayed caught until the chopper went into the water. These aircraft are designed to float to some degree, and all the pilots are trained for underwater bailouts, so while there was some danger the the crew, they were safely picked up by the patrol boats behind the amphib.

      ...my friend used to do that same type of work that guy is doing in the picture, he was in a situation like that, they are (as you said) trained for underwater bailouts. my friend and his co-pilot came out just fine.

    of howhard it is to land on a moving ship. it is more difficult for a helicopter toland on a moving ship than a fighter jet since a helicopter is almost landing vertically so the shipis actually moving from underneath them
