  • Heimaey Eruption

    This film was shot in 1973. There were no deaths. the citizens of the town were evacuated on fishing boats to the Icelandic mainland.
    The advance of lava was controlled by 'freezing' the forward face with seawater, but the town was really saved when the volcano naturally ceased its eruption. Nothing man did or could do to cause that. Though it had been feared that the harbour would be destroyed, in the event, the lava.ended up providing a better barrier at the harbour mouth, improving its safety in storms. The island's airport has a better runway now, on top of the lavafield. And the new soil is very fertile, a bonus to the grazing sheep. the cameraman responsible for much of that footage was Hjalmar R. Bardasson.

    Great work by the firefighters/emergency crews. I'm hopeful no lives were lost.

    I'm not an Icelander, but, Marco444, if you were my next door neighbour, with your attitude, I would not accept you as a drinking partner, friend, neighbour, aquaintance, or Terrestian, (to you someone who is a native of this planet Earth). I hope events like this don't happen to you, but if it does, I'll try not to say I told you so.

      Marco444 expresses him selve to be lucky not to live where vulcanos erupt. Hence, he feels those who were in this event are unlucky. What do you want him to be????? Must every comment on a unlucky event have the sentence " I hope no one got hurt". I sure hope not!
      Please think again. Otherwise you might end up all by yourselve. Rejecting everyone around you because you didn't understand what they were saying.
      I hope however that you have lots and lots of drinking buddys.

      What is wrong with saying you feel lucky to live in the North west. I think he was stating that he was glad it did not happen where he lived. Is there something wrong with that?
