Codenamed `Flanker' by NATO, the twin-seat SU-30, a derivative of the Su-27, is a multi-role fighter bomber and air superiority aircraft which can also be used in the maritime strike role.

    Yup that plane is awesome and very capable, but it's just not Su-30. That paticular model is Su-30MKI, only made for India...no other country has acess to it or can buy it. It is advanced/better than a Su-35 and can take on/win most of the jets out there. It already has proven itself against U.S Air Forces' F-16's....9 outta 10 wins.

      now think about the timing of the war game. airforce wants new jets congress says NO. so airforce tells everyone about how they would have lost 9 out of 10 in air to air games because of outdated jets. do you want to be the congressman who is willing to kill off american fighter pilots to save money? I am not trashing the indian pilots or the machine they are flying but gives a bit of back ground on things.

  • The only reason

    That this plane looks so awesome in flight and can do those ridiculous manouvres is because it has an experimental technology known as 'wing-tip vectoring' its where engine thrust is diverted to the tips of the wings through tubes and is then utilised to allow the plane to practically stop and hover in mid air without the engine stalling, and yes, to pilot one of these things you have to be an amazing pilot and be able to resist higher g-forces than normal fighter pilots. My favourite Sukhoi is still the Su-37 with reverse wing configuration.

      I can guarantee you that the F-22 would blow it out of the sky easy. you can have all those move (moves in which the 22 can also perform) but well keep with the technology and stealth. You can hit what you can't see. and considering the U.S. has unmatched tech the 22 has no match in the world... not to mention the pilots that have much better training!

      It never looks like any US aircraft. The eagles, falcons and hornets are much more bulkier than the flanker. SUkhois, if that's the right plural for it, are slimmer and notice the neck it's like a cobra's. Get it?

      The SU-27/30 is not a copy of any american or western airplane. It can fly maneuvres no western airplane until the F-22 and could flew. The aerodynamic design of the Flanker was superior to any western plane at this time (remember it´s nearly 30 years ago!) and even now it is a hard enemy to kill. Western fighter planes allways had the better electronic systems and could detect the soviet planes earlier, what gives them a big advantage, because who shoots first usual wins. But in dog fight I don´t see much of a chance for an F-16 or so, as long as the pilot of the F-16 is not really great.

      There are some typical russian details in design, like the doors of the wheels are protecting the engines from objects from the ground, so the planes can start and land on any large meadow or even on a frozen river or sea. The idea behind this was the knowledge all airstrips will be destroyed soon in a war between east and west and there has to be the capability to start counter attacs. The western solution for this problem was the Harrier.
