Looks to good to be true.
Is hot.
to begin with....do not compare spartans with mongos...since they lived in different times....and as everyone know u cant compare different things....it would be like comparing todays U.S marine with berzerkers ..... secondly if someone read a bit history u will see that the mongos were always more in most of their battles....unlike greek warriors...not only spartans... but also athenias in the battle of marathon.... and more... also i would like to mention that the persians were more than a million....and if u disagree go read Herodotus.... i will also like to say that the reason that spartans stayed is because they never leaved the battlefield unlees they were victorius.... they knew that if they went to Sparta as loosers they would not be accepted not even by they mothers......also the guy that darred to compare tha spartans with the nazi.....dude....u must be a real dumbass....that times the only way to survive was to be a powerful military force....especially the spartans who had maaaany slaves (eilotes) that were too many and needed to be controled.... do not compare them with the nazis ...its totaly stupid..... and last thing..... remember ....that the cradle of the western at least civilization was born in athens.....however .... if there werent these 300 spartans....and 700 thespieis....that are not mentioned...cause they were not that strong as a military force ...but they also stayed with them to fight.....there would be no democracy....cause the persians would have probably won that war.....so ..... show a bit of respect....some died for their freedom.... and some others were buchering women and children....like the mongols and the nazis......the movie kicks ass!!!
the persians wanted to attack greece and sparta so they allied eachother. the persian army didnt have the time to go through the conventional route to athens So they went through this pass. There was a fault in the plan because ther is another way around the pass. the entire army defending the pass was not the 300. there was about 1500 other greek soldiers behind them, defending the way around the pass. One day a scout saw persian soldiers advancing toward them. The greeks did NOT have the same advantage as the spartans did, so they retreated to a nearby city. The persians went around the pass and flanked the spartans from the back. the spartans were over whelmed and evantaually killed.

By Braedon 1176420041 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI do agree one should not compare the spartans with the mongols but you should learn your history before accusing others of not doing so, for instance the battle of Bun'ei and Legnica which the mongols were successful with much lesser numbers. Most battle legends are exaggerated especially by the loser and therefore the mongols seems like an endless horde rather than a trained and diciplined fighting machine, the battle of Thermopylae was most likey to have been 200 thousand persians not a million.

perhaps its u that have not read history... as far as the number is concerned read Irodotus... to see how many were the persians... people who say that Spartans were homosexuals...or that the persians were less than 200.000 are just jealous of greek history.... i dont say that im a nationalist...or something like this....but when u see mongols compared to Spartans... buchers and warriors that died in order to unite greeks .... i cannnot write all the historic facts....as i told u before...read history and do not compare different things ....as mongols and spartnans are....
By tolis19 1172663634 Reply Spam [-2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveFor heavens sake, i'm currently studying ancient history and archaeology and i would be called an idiot if i accepted classical literary sources (several which contradict each other) as hard solid facts. They are written by humans with biased views and you must balance it with logistical statistics, unless you have solid archaeological proof. Logistically the the persians would have numbered around 200k no problem, of which i stated before and you seem to agree. However the spartans fought to protect the pelopenese not to unite all the greeks, if you argue on this fact then you do not understand ancient greek culture which is based on individual city states and not a single nation.

There is in fact evidence that romantic eros was seen as homosexual all over Greece. Sparta, even with its relatively free women, had homosexual relationships built into the structure of the training all young Spartan men received . In other Dorian areas also homosexuality was widely accepted. Thebes saw in the 4th century the creation of a battalion of homosexual lovers - the Sacred Band. In Crete we have evidence of ritualised abduction of younger by older men.

It was believed that the strong bond between lovers would cause them to fight even more fiercely than an army of one's family or tribe. And that a warrior would rather die in battle than disgrace his lover. They fought valiantly and fiercely in battle for nearly thirty-three years. The Sacred Band of Thebes was defeated by Phillip of Macedon and his son, Alexander the Geat, at the battle of Chaeronea.

By whatever100 1166445820 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe battle of The Gates Of Fire has been the subject of many books and films, but this particular movie isn't a remake of a previous film.
Frank Miller and Lynn Varley did a 5-issue comic book series (which was later compiled in a hardcover book) called "300".
It, of course, was based on Frank Miller's interpretation of the events. Think noir/SinCity.
This movie is based on Frank Miller's series, building off of the "Sin City" movie's success.
Either way, it looks great, and I intend to be one of the first to see it.

In ancient Greece, the Spartan General Leonidas was charged with guarding a mountain pass with just 300 men to delay the invading million man Persian army. When the Persian leader Xerxes offered to spare his men if they gave up their arms, Leonidas replied "Molon Lave", or "Come and get them.".

By hesho0o0o 1165745065 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethe reason the movie is called 300 is because the spartans have 300 guys on this little island holding back the whole persian army (about 1 million). these 300 have been trained since birth, and are xtremely good. the persian army comes, and tries to capture the island. 300 spartans hold off 1 million for about 20 days, but in the end, the 300 die. the persian army continues extremely weakened, and after about 2 battles on the mainland, the go back 2 persia. another amazing thing is that the 300 spartans didn use bows n arrows, they found it cowardly and unmanly (cuz u can just stand hundreds of feet away, shoot, and not die). they held them back with just ther spears, swords, and shields. ther was a major chokepoint on the island, and thats rly wat allowed them 2 last so long. amazing... They DId however acquire the aid of a greek turncoat. The spartian Commander dismissed all his allies from every peloponnesian city EXCEPT the THEBIANS and the 300, being his own men. The hand to hand combat became bloody as hell and it is said that Xerxes rose 3 times from his throne in horror at the losses.
Leonidas and his men fought to the last man.Surviving thebians were capturedand the persians resumed their advance on athens.
The spartans did however kill teh persian General Mardonius, whose sword is displayed in the Erechthium on the Athenian Acropolis as the spoils of war.

By celiaccm 1161872273 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe Greeks run to a hill for a last stand at the entry to the narrows of the pass. Now the Thebans under the command of Leontiades surrender and the Thespians and the Spartans are left to their fate. There are only 900-1000 men left! They stand in close ranks and the Persians completeley circle them and fire thousands of arrows and spears to kill them. The battle site was discovered in modern times by finding the Persian arrowheads. Xerxes found the body of king Leonidas and had it beheaded and the body crucified.
Thus ended the Battle Of Thermopylae, the ultimate stand against impossible odds! A Golden lion was erected on the hill where the Thespians and Spartans made their last stand in honor of King Leonidas. It is said the Persians lost 20,000 men. But now the road to Athens and central Greece is wide open. Athens is just 85 miles away, no more than 2 days distance for the Persian cavalry! But the Greeks had some luck at this time. The Navy off of Thermopylae at Artemisium had better luck!
This battle is a true showing of courage and betrayal. Coastal fire signals are used to alert Greece that Xerxes leaves Therma and Spartan king Leonidas is given command of the Greeks at Thermopylae. A festival in Sparta delays their whole army from marching to the pass. The pass is almost perfect for holding an army at bay. It is only 8 or 9 feet wide at its smallest point. In antiquity it was a cliffside pass. Enemies could be speared and thrown over the cliff into the sea. Today the silt has built up to over a mile from the sea.
By September 13, Xerxes has made it to the pass and the Greeks have 271 warships at Artemisium. The fire signals alert them that the navy is approaching. Xerxes waits for 4 days before attacking the Greeks (hoping they will just run away) which number only about 4200. On September 17 the Median and Elimite(Cissian) divisions are sent forward. The Greeks make short work of them but do this all day long. Many are simply drove off the cliffs. Xerxes sends his bodyguard, called the "Immortals" by Herodotus but really known as "Companions". The Persian name of the royal guard is Anûšya ("Companions"), but Herodotus had written Anauša ("Immortals"). 3 times Xerxes panics when the Greeks drive them off. The main reason is that the Greeks use longer spears so the Persians can't reach them. On the 18th the Persian do no better. Each Greek cities' contingent take a turn leading the defense to give the other guys a break. But the Phocian division guards a mountain path that will be of use later. But the Persians get what they need. A Greek named Ephialtes informs Xerxes that he can outflank the Greeks by using the mountain path that cuts around the pass to the south. Xerxes already knows the Greeks have only 4200 men. They use the path on the night of the 18th. On the morning of September 19, 480 BC a Persian contingent walks too loudly on the dry oak leaves (obviosly late August or later) and wakes the Phocians. They think the whole Persian army is coming toward them and retreat a little and stand to fight to the death. But the Persians don't have time to mess with them and hurry down the mountain. They must get behind the pass of Thermopylae before sunup. Leonidas learns that the Persians have outflanked him. He tells his men to eat well since they won't survive the day. He sends 2600 men back south and remains with his 300 Spartan personal guard and the 1100 Boetians (700 Thespians and 400 Thebans) stay to stall for time. Leonidas remembers the oracle about Sparta and stands firm. This can only explain such a decision to stay here instead of retreating to the Corinthian Isthmus. Although the Greeks now number only 1400 or so, the Persians are scared to death of them. Their infantry has to be whipped forward by the officers and pure numbers eventually overwhelmed the Spartans. Leonides falls in the fight and the remaining Greeks use all their power to drive the enemy back to get his body (it took 4 attempts of non-hoplite styl

i would gladly lend you my history book from high school which has 6 pages for that battle .... but it is in greek . Check it out guys the battle of Thermopulae is the ultimate act of 1000 true heroes ( they were actually 1000 greek warriors because there were also 700 thespians who joined Leonidas and his spartans to eternal glory)
I am from Greece . I am really proud to know the history of my ancestors . I'd like to say that the moovie is not based on a comic but on the true history of the 1st Persian War at the 5th century b.C. It is about the true battle of Thermopylae where 300 Lakedemonians (this is how they were called during that era ) and 700 Thespians fought the most fearsome and courageous battle ever given on the history of this planet . (Yes there was a battalion of Thespians who fought beside Spartans knowing that they would protect the united greek army from raiders ) As my friend stated Ancient Spartans or Lakedemonians were a really proud tribe ... Every time they were leaving Sparta for battle their wives would give them their shield telling them "Tas i epi tan" which means come back either carying it or beeing caried on it. Spartans never left a battle ... They fought to the end . If a man returned to Sparta with a wound on his back he was executed for leaving battle . for 12 years they were trained to be warriors . Before the battle Xerxis sent a recon to check the spartans . He saw them saving , bathing , comping their hair . When he asked a greek mercenary why they did this the mercenary replied to them .... Cause they want to die pretty . According to Herodote ( father of the science of history ) Xerxis realised that it would be a really tough battle so he ordered about 30000 troops to prepare for battle . well ..... i should not tell you the story of the film :D
Watch the film guys you'll like it . It is 10 times better story than the Gladiator . ELLHNARES MOU PISTEPSTE ME THA EINAI KAI GAMW TIS TAINIES KAI THA TO GOUSTAREI OLOS O KOSMOS

Thermopiles is the place where the sacrifice of the 300 spartan warriors and.the 700 warriors of Eretria (another place in Greece) took place.King of the spartans Leonidas and his men told the other greek generals and armies (Athinians, Corinthians etc.) to leave and protect the rest of Greece and they with their memorable courage stayed behind with the other 700 warriors to defend Thermopiles from Xerxis' army. When the persien king told them to surrender and give their weapons Leo told him "molon lave" which means "come and get it". Although they were just 1000 soldiers against the uncountable persian army they stood in front of them as men.Persians had foot soldiers, archers, cavalry they could not break the greek defence for two days. A greek guy named Efialtis betrayed the greek army and shown the persians a path which lead behind the greek defence and the killed them all ! So, that's the true story not only for leonidas and the 300 but and the others greek soldiers who stood like heroes, fought like heroes and died like heroes.

Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy. The film brings Miller’s (Sin City) acclaimed graphic novel to life by combining live action with virtual backgrounds that capture his distinct vision of this ancient historic tale.

By eXisTence 1161070334 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure Mongols and Persians are different.
By Dontgo 1161006640 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWhy don't people make a movie about the mongols? They are the real warriors! They had the best soldiers. Not the nazi, survival of the fittest spartans.
By Raptor17Alpha 1160966746 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveTheir fighting ability was down to natural human power rather than technology alone. The mongols were true warriors than everyone feared. Mongols were physically superior to many other nations of the time and their technical sword abilites were amazing.
By Tulay 1161031441 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHave you really studied the norsemen? Vikings? Study them and you'll find out who invented the blood lust. Mongols were savage like many others. To say one is superior to another is rather lopsided. Time and tech make a big diff but ultimately in fighting prowess they were equals.
By Elacio 1161137835 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveSpartans or whatever greek of that time would F**k them no prob
By sertheo1 1169767715 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeare you stupid?
the mongols ALWAYS had superior numbers and arms, and they were a horde. not an army, a horde.
they were godless barbarians and even if it were 50:1 in favor of mongolians [if they were even in the same millenia, that is] the spartans would have slaughtered every last one
I want to see a movie that have the barbarians. Specifically the Beserker barabrians that fought while messed up. They were crazy f***ers!
I've been dying to see a good movie about the mongol warriors.

By Ceres 1160965641 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removehow 300 athen warriors stood up against thousands of persians
By Believer01 1160945972 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removehow 300 spartans stood up, not athens. there's a difference: spartans are better.
By Dontgo 1161006497 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei agree... and personally (being a woman) i hate athens for their sexism against women.. spartans raised boys and girls the same so the women could take over tasks that men could... sparta frickin' rocks! (not just for that but for many other reasons)

Battle of Thermopylae, where the King of Sparta led his army against the advancing Persians; the battle is said to have inspired all of Greece to band together against the Persians, and helped usher in the world's first democracy.

By questerl 1161526358 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveLooks like Matrix B.C.E I love historical type movies, this oe looks entertaining, but I thinnk too much fake history is squished together. Japanese Samurajs and African ...arimies with living dead mutants while focusing on real names like Sparta kinda cheezzz. They should have come up with other "hero" name for the movie not actual Greek coz plot is totally fake.
By Schlecht 1161019761 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveOMG.I see people with no historical knowledge. Now i see people that do not want to learn about what has happened, even from a hollywood movie!Open your eyes!!!!!!!!!!

By notorious 1161061857 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveBlack masked people with double Katanas behind their back they are not Iranian, LOL.
By Schlecht 1161113989 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThey are the 10 000 Immortals, the royal guard of Xerxes. Persians. Not Samurais. Idiot.
By BreakingYourRim 1173879724 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIf you learned about this event in history you would know that the guys in masks that you refer to our the "Persian Immortals" that were an elite Imperial Guard regiment during the Persian Wars and not 'samurais'. The reason you see other races such as Africans and Asians besides Persians is because the Persian army had conquered other lands and forced them to fight with them in their wars against Greece. Many of the 1st wave of attackers against the 300 Spartans were men who did not want to fight, there were men on horse carriages whipping them from behind if they tried to turn around and retreat.
By Sero420 1161122962 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removea movie (alteriation of some facts, from the comic) based on a
graphic novel (a comic book, ALOT of alterated facts) based on the battle of Thermopylae.
Which is ridicilous this movie will be more braindead then Doom.
In real life the pass was held by a big army, only after the persians discovered the way around the pass and emerged behind the greeks the big army retreated, leaving around 1000 volunteers, 300 of them spartans.
Now, Defending a passage 14 yards wide (12meters) with 1000soldiers behind a wall of shields (a phalanx) isn't that hard since you got long ass spears killing enemies long before they get close enough to stab you with a sword.
against a million enemies it's not that easy. And their spears didn't last forever, they broke, then they used swords, and then they broke then they used their hands. Also the Persians had more weapons than just swords.
By Dontgo 1161087619 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removemaybe not but they didn't face a million enemies now did they?
By Purre 1161105754 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt was anywhere from 200,000 to almost 2 million, so history just says a million.
By Dontgo 1161108541 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removespartans=sausage eaters ;)
and they made no wieners in the kitchen back then ...
it wasnt the spartans you piece of S**t it was the warriors of Theva 'ieros loxos' they were the H**os
By freedom forever 1161790778 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove300 against 0ne million...THINK ABOUT IT!! The truth be told, the iranians were slaughtered and were set up for a horrific massacre from the Greek forces later at Salamis... Not to mention the invasion and total distraction of their homeland later (Remember the burninf of Persepolis asshole Iranians)...Long live Democracy, long live Greece...Down with the Camel Jockeys
