HAWX from Ubisotf
Despite normally being unwilling to add to the problem of EB Games/ Gamestop’s trade-in business, I was overcome with an overwhelming desire to pick up a new game. So, being presented with the rare opportunity to go on a trip outside of where I live (see also: Middle of Nowhere), I scooped up a few of the games I had finished or played infrequently at best and headed to the nearest EB Games to trade them in for a generous helping of store credit.
Once I had completed this distasteful transaction, I proceeded to head towards the wall of 360 games to choose the best of the best — and instead I winded up with HAWX.
Now let me get one thing straight: HAWX isn’t$ a bad game. I actually quite enjoy the way it feels on the 360 controller. The game is “arcade” enough to let you disregard any thought to the conversation of ammo, and being a game in the Tom Clancy’s series they have spiced up the weapons and vehicles with ‘futuristic ‘ technology (which basically boils down to being able to flip your plane on a dime).
Multiplayer is hit or miss. Instead of utilizing Microsoft’s TrueSkill system to make their multiplayer (team deathmatch) fair they opt for a more simplistic approach, leaving the lobby a long list of player hosted games with no way to gauge your opponents skill. When you get into a game with people that are roughly the same skill as yourself you can have an absolute blast — I, however, mostly get stuck in games with players leagues beyond my ability and get destroyed.
The thing that disappoints me is that nobody really seems to be playing this. I could see my circle of friends picking this up and the group of us enjoying the multiplayer as much as we enjoy the simple multiplayer/trashtalk of Peggle or the team aspects of Gears 2. HAWX seems to have the vibe of a game that while being mindless destruction and fun will wind up in the barbain bin in no time, leaving the selection of fighter planes in the multiplayer lobby grounded.
