Finding transportation traveling around Costa Rica can be a challenge at times. For those of us that use the public buses this information is going to come in handy. There are a number of public buses zooming around Costa Rica and they make for a very cheap way to get around. However, they have been know to attract criminals catering to Ticos and tourist. The bus usually has one or two storage compartments for your bags. If your bags are larger they will fit on the buses underbelly just fine. However, It has been a problem with travelers in Costa Rica to find out that their bags were taken out from the bottom compartment somewhere along the ride. And the other alternative is a small compartment above your seats. This top compartment has also been known to attract passengers to casually walk off the bus with someones bags. If you do any research at all on bus crime you will find that this is a huge problem in Costa Rica. DO NOT fall asleep on those long bus rides and expect to wake up to your bags in the same place! DO NOT read a book or look out the window the whole time and expect your bags to be in the same place! KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR THINGS!!

  • Theft on the Buses in Costa Rica !

Oh My God ! What a douche bags these two ! I have been traveling four times in Costa Rica in the past twelve years, and never I have had anything stolen in a bus or hotel nor in the streets ! Why ? Because I do not look like a potential target ! I feel so sorry when I see Americans traveling in Costa Rica or anywhere else !They seem that they are going to be stabbed or killed anytime... 9/11 really did traumatized you guys...At one point that you should only travel in your own country ! However, I do agree with one of their advise : When you seat in the bus, always put away your belongings on the opposite side, so you can keep an eye on the people that may stand in the aisle, if you put it on top of your head, you will not see what's going on. Also, when people get in the bus, give a quick look to each of them, it is easy to see at first glance and make the difference between, a decent person, a nice couple, a mother with kids, a housewife, from a burglar or a criminal... Also, keep in mind, that a trouble maker usually does not have the mean to pay 3000 colones to go from San Jose to Puerto Viejo or Upala. They do that in very short and unexpensive trips and most of the time in the vicinity of the capital.

So enjoy your holidays in Costa Rica, it is safe, it is nice, the people are very friendly and humble ! And if I get in a bus one day, and see these two Rednecks, one fully covered with tatoos, I will probably get of of it and get the next one,really....
