  • Sound barrier??

I thought you could not see sound, only hear it!

    • Well

Acctually, you're not seeing the sound, just the physical manifestation of it in the form of condensation in the air as it forms due to the vacuum behind the plane and the "wall" of air that it pulls directly behind it. Or something. I haven't had enough sleep, but it's something like that.

    • im smarter than you

the 'misty' cone is created by the plane breaking the sound barrier in a high moisture atmosphere you dumbasses

    • Um...

Yeah, that's what I said. Perhaps not so succinctly... but that *is* what I said.

  • i dont think

he actually broke the sound barrier, he may have reached the speed of sound, but he didnt break it. if he had broen it thay white all would have dissapeared. but it stayed with him the whole time.

  • yea

you cant see sound but the sound shapes the mist in the air

  • Transonic Flight

The white condensation forming off the middle/rear of the aircraft is caused by it approaching the sound barrier, also know as "Transonic". It is very close to breaking the sound barrier but definitely has not done so yet. Like the previous poster pointed out you do not hear a sonic boom.

    • transonic flight

though the plane is flying just below mach 1 (no sonic boom), the flow over the wing may be supersonic. the cone shaped formation is condensed air, and is only dependent and the "local temperature" i.e at a certain temperature
Note: in moving air local temperature is a function of the mach number

    • in addition

by condensed air i mean condensed water vapour in the air...and to the temperature dependence u can also throw in humidity

  • Where is the sonic boom?!

If this plane is breaking the sound barrier, and I doubt he would be allowed to at such low altitude, then there should be a sonic boom following it closely. Besides I'm not even sure modern planes can even break the speed of sound at low altitude like that, too much air pressure.

  • it's not breaking the sound barrier

it's not going more than 350 knots.
those are just little clouds caused by humidity

    • Wrong

If that were so, you would see that all the time on airliners and pvt jets. And yes I know that in the US there is a regulation of flying no more than 250 below 10,000 feet, it is waverable and happens all the time, and you dont see this. 20 years in the USN in Air Traffic, I have only seen this a dozen times or so due to the hazards and property damage of supersonic fligh close to populated areas.
