If im the guy who pulled the bags out, i would have thought about securing myself with a line first, and if im one of the rescuers, i would have improvised a snorkel ( a lead pipe would do). I guess they all panicked.

When you are a rescue worker you do not take time to make a snorkel to try and save a guy. If they took a min or 2 to make one before they tried to save him, he would die. When you have a job like they do you act first, and think about your life after that. Just think of the brave firefighters on 9/11.

The sucktion of the pipe was way bigger then anyone could have guessed, so thinking that it would S**k you down was not the first thing on his mind.

is the first rule of underwater drowning when you cannot get their head above water. take a breathe and go under to pass it to him. this way he can breath consistantly instead of swallowing water.

I am the firerman/ rescuer and at the start of the video I asked how big the hole was and you can see him indicating it was only about 4-5" in diametre. they were not bags of grass but sandbags. no time to get a hose for him to breath through. just pull him up to the surface. our breathing apperatus are not designed to work underwater. thanks steve

Snorkel is no option.When youre 1m under the water line, the pressure goes up till 1bar...under that kind of pressure your lungs are just not strong enough to breath in.
Snoreling is ok when you are swimming, because your lungs are right beneath the water

First of all The guy who pulled the bags out was probably thinking it is just the job he's been doing so many times there shouldn't be any problem he grabed the guy's hand that's is usually enough. So he is not stupid it's what most people would do. 2nd in a water THAT DIRTY and AT NIGHT do you think the guy in the water wounld know it's a snorkel and they are trying to help him? 3rd they got their hands full trying to pull him out that's how strong the sucktion is What's going to happen if you put a pipe there. the thing happend hes put is feet in to the hole curious the hole is free from clog and you cant make a snorkel on a situation like that u can do snorkel if the water is not clear try it your self close your eyes n do the snorkling wellsee

No one thought to cut 2 feet off of one and pass it under to use as a snorkle? My very first instinct would have been to take my hard hat off and place it on surface to trap air and push it under and over the guys face. Even that would have bought him several minutes... brute force seems like the worst choice but that is all they thought to use... I am glad it worked out for the guy though.
