How do you find a flintstone? I understand how to hit one rock against another... but how do you find the right rock? If you have to travel to a distant location to find a flintstone... why not travel to the local 7-11 for a lighter?

This is a demonstration. I just used a paper towel for simplicity and easy of demonstration. In practice, a guy might have used materials found in nature. Very dry completely rotten wood crumbled up will catch sparks. The fine "paper" from a wasp nest will also catch sparks. Even a few species of dry mushroom can be used for the purpose.

On the char cloth, this is simply cotton fabric that has been placed in a closed metal box and put on a fire to burn. Basically, you turn it into charcoal, thus charcloth. This was a common staple of fire building for the mountain man or frontiersman. It catches the spark, and will glow brightly allowing your other tinder to burst into flame.

    • now I know....

if scientists tested your boots they would find michigan soil on them...
      2 questions I have...
      1) where or how does one find flint in the wild? if you have to bring it with you... why not just bring a bic lighter?
      2) the cloth.. you just heat it and close off the air so it does not combust? how do you know when it is ready?

you must be one of those parents that instead of showing your kids how to start a fire safely, and teach them to resrect it, you would rather them not know and accidentally burn down your house. its just like guns, if you teach children how to safely use them and when to use them, you wont have as many little kids shooting themselves. so in reply... thats clever, dont show your kids how to handle fire, let them not know how to use it and start a fire on accident, good parenting

    • Yeah, you are so right...

it's way better to hide things from your kids and keep them ignorant and curious than it is to educate them. They teach things like this in cub scouts, it's not like he's showing his kid how to mainline heroin. I guess your kids think fire is evil majic huh.
