    It does mean something different than what most of the world thinks it does. The sign of the middle finger was used after a war on the Germans (I think it was Germans) who were predominantly archers at the time. (using their middle fingers to shoot). The opposing army (I forget who) claimed that when they won the war they would cut off all the middle fingers of the German archers so they would be useless. When the Germans won the war they marched the POW's through a regiment of archers who were all holding up their middle fingers to prove that they still had them.

      The English at war with the french at several battles including Agincourt, and were killing the french from a long way off with longbows, the french got a bit pissed at this and removed the TWO fingers that an archer needs to draw a bow, from any english prisoners they managed to capture, At the end of the day, the french lost (again)and any that were captured were given the V sign to the defeated soldiers as a show that the English archers had won the day, This was repeated often as we English were good at beating the crap out of the french. And how we laughed when they kept trying.

      So in conclusion,Mr bean is not a history teacher, he's an idiot. and secondly Your story of the germans and the one finger is a figment of your imagination/poor memory.

      and the English that had not been captured showed the French their fingers. Since yew is the kind of wood the bows were made of, shooting the bow was called "plucking the yew". From there it's just a short way to "pluck yew" en those often heard friendly words that sound the same...
