Brett, try to understand, when someone protects one liberty for himself, he is also protecting all liberties for all people everywhere.
The cop was totally out of line and his language was unacceptable for someone on the public payroll.
When things become so bad that anyone can be forced to display ID to any law enforcement officer just because they ask for it, the country is lost. (Ve must see your papers)
There is the doctrine of Probable Cause and when police can ignore that, you are then living in a totalitarian police state.
"When they came for the blacks, I didn't speak up because I wasn't black.
When they came for the homosexuals, I didn't speak up because I wasn't a homosexual.
When they came for the Jews and liberals, I didn't speak up because I was neither a Jew or a liberal.
When they came for me, there was no one left to speak up for me."
No matter where you are on the issue of gun control or any other issue, legal activity should be defended at all times.
This sort of stunt is just asking for trouble, especially not providing id when asked, and not presenting your license to carry the firearm.
If you have not identified yourself or shown your permit and you are a stranger in town, then by definition you are a unidentified person carrying an unlicensed gun, and just asking for trouble.
This is not about carrying, but part of being polite and respectful to the law (and to diferentiate yourself from criminals) which would be to state you have a gun permit, and offer to display it.
There are far better examples of people carrying guns who were polite and showed documentation when asked, and then where the policeman was then on the side of the person lawfully carrying.
Traveling around, and purposefully irritating cops, is not going to help your cause. Stirring up "citizens" who vote for / employ the local county sherrif is not going to help your cause either, especially in areas or smaller towns where carrying guns is unusual.
I personally don't come from a gun culture, so while i respect your right to carry a gun, i'd also understand citizens in a non-gun culture being offended by carrying a gun in a smaller or peaceful town.
I could understand gun carrying in a large city, and i imagine that in this case not may people would bat an eyelid as every second person would probably be carrying a pistol or an uzi..
