In this clip from the movie "Bolero" (1934) actor George Raft demonstrates the art of "taxi dancing." A taxi dancer is a professional dance partner in a two-person dance. Taxi dancers are hired by patrons on a dance-by-dance basis. The term "taxi" dancer comes from the fact that the amount the dancer is paid is proportional to the amount of time spent with a client - not unlike a taxi driver with a "fare." Taxi dancers are not prostitutes and no sexual favors are to be expected. (However, some taxi dancers have admitted earning extra money by offering sexual services.)

George Raft worked as a taxi dancer in his youth.
