The LRO is a recon orbiter which will do a total surface survey of the moon. The LCROSS (part of the same launch) is taking the long way round and arrives in four months time. It's taking the second stage of the rocket with it. The second stage will be rammed into a crater and something like 500mph (iirc), and the LCROSS will fly through the debris plume looking for water ice and other stuff.
