Hampton County resident Thomas Joyner, 48, became the first South Carolinian to receive an innovative HeartMate II device at MUSC's Heart & Vascular Center in April. HeartMate II, a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), is designed to improve blood flow, heart function and quality of life in advanced heart failure patients who are awaiting a transplant. MUSC is the only medical center in South Carolina that performs heart transplants and has HeartMate II.
