  • Im proud of my Government

My prime Minister, Stephen Harper, has denied trade talks with the Chinese on the grounds of human rights violations. He represents Canada's ideals of humanity over the almighty dollar. I hope the rest of the world will do the same. China is fast becoming a world power on the backs of poor and powerless citizens. I would rather live in a poor country than grow rich exploiting others.

Yeah. And I admire Harper too. I believe Harper might as well take a role in supporting Taiwan against China's military agression.

    • but...

But the trade still goes on,i know bcoz my relatives recieve shipments of really cheap merchandise every 3 months.
Its all abt business,in this competitive western world,u cannot survive if ur costs, such as labor is high.Canada has lots of resources of its own,but most other western countries dont, esp Europeans.Only when we put these kind of priorities before profit can we eliminate this system.
People bad mouth U.S. for its aggresion but China is far worse, bcoz of wat it does to its own ppl.Although this is from Sky News, ultra right,it probably happens and the case of the Canadian Chinese who has been arrested and sentenced to 20 yrs in China, for being a religious figure is one example.Peter Mackay was at fault there, not bailing him out when we had the chance.
I personally support the liberals, for other reasons, esp. since they arent that cozy with the Americans, and spend more on the public.Nice to see Canadians here.

Don't believe what you read are see in the Media! I've lived in China for 18 years and I'm from the West. China human rights violations are no worst than the rest of the civilized world.

Lots of Canadian companies here and you PM may be sayin g no trade with the P.R.C., but your businesses aren,t following the same set of rules. Grown-up you sound more like some "bleeding heart yank"!

      • China Also Has A US ACLU Supreme Court, ...

The very save thing goes on here everyday. Peoples homes are taken to build Condos and gambling Casinos. One man lost $M of land in Los Angles so homeless people could grow vegitables. We call it Emminet Domain. What is it called in China. Many times if we complain to the government we can loose our jobs.

          • The asian way.

This is appalling, so capitalism has been good for the average Chinese? I think not! This country needs to rise up out of thousands of years of corruption, which is the asian way. There are the haves, and the have nots everywhere sadly. Pity china dosent seem to care about her people...life is cheap with 1.3billion souls. Sad to think that most of them will never know what goes on, no wonder I seem them as Lemmings.

This sort of thing should be publicised before the Olympics.

              • eminent domain is not the same as chines...

I knew the instant I saw this that there would be some idiot who would claim that the US faces the same threat and "it's happening here." Frankly, that's insulting to what's happening to the people in China. These are people being thrown out on the street, given nowhere else to live, given no compensation for their homes, and no procedure to redress their grievances. Yes, in the U.S. there is a procedure written into the Constitution for the government to seize land for its use, but they _have_ to compensate you for fair market value, and there are a variety of legal procedures for challenging such an action, not to mention the fact that any politicians who attempt to make an unreasonable land grab can be voted out of office. Quit your goddamn ignorant whining and keep some perspective. Can eminent domain be abused? Absolutely. Is it, or could it realistically ever be, anything like what you just saw in China? No. Not without a far more monumental erosion of the Constitution than we've seen in even the Bush administration.
