Please, let's stop acting like whining little babies. This was over 5 years ago, it was one building. Let's stop wearing our hearts on our sleave and just get over it. The problems in the U.S. are miniscule compared to the problems some countries have. Please stop posting lame videos such as this.

This article is excerpted from the summer 2006 issue of Ms. Magazine, available on newsstands now.

When the Taliban, the most anti-woman militia in Afghanistan's civil war, took over the country in 1996, it immediately forced women to leave their jobs, banned work outside the home, prohibited females from attending school and put women under house arrest, unable to go out in public unless accompanied by a close male relative and wearing a head-to-toe burqa. Women who violated Taliban decrees were beaten, imprisoned, even killed.

Despite this, the U.S. government was on the fast track to recognize this unelected, oppressive regime as Afghanistan's official government and to prop up the militia with millions of taxpayer dollars.

      Why? In a word: oil.

Unocal Corp. of California (now part of Chevron), in partnership with a Saudi consortium, was competing with an Argentine company to build an oil pipeline through Afghanistan to the coast of Pakistan. The U.S. government wanted to secure the project for Unocal.

The Clinton State Department announced that it would establish relations with the Taliban by sending a diplomat to Kabul, and several envoys were dispatched to woo the Taliban for the pipeline rights. State Department spokesperson Glyn Davies said the United States found "nothing objectionable" in the steps taken by the Taliban to impose Islamic law. Only a concentrated effort by the Feminist Majority, NOW and allied groups around the world prevented the Taliban from being recognized as the official government of Afghanistan, and kept the United States from sanctioning the abolishment of women's most basic human rights in service of the petroleum industry.

This is perhaps the starkest example of why the politics of oil is a feminist issue. Whether supporting gender apartheid abroad, or sacrificing feeding programs for U.S. women and children so that ExxonMobil can get a tax break, or simply standing by while the company reaps record profits at the expense of poor women who must drive to work and heat their houses, U.S. priorities are consistent: Oil wins over women's rights hands down.

Many believe oil was the principal, if not the only, reason for the Iraq war. A top-secret 2001 National Security Council document, written before 9/11 and two years prior to military action in Iraq, directed staff to cooperate fully with Vice President Cheney's secretive Energy Task Force as it considered the "melding" of two seemingly unrelated areas of policy: "the review of operational policies towards rogue states," such as Iraq, and "actions regarding the capture of new and existing oil and gas fields." The State Department's "Oil and Energy Working Group" reached a consensus that Iraq's oil "should be opened to international oil companies as quickly as possible after the war."

Whether or not this blood-for-oil scenario is the whole story, the new Iraqi Constitution and laws already passed contain far stronger guarantees for ma

During the Cold War, American propaganda was a tool in an anti communist crusade; today, it is a facet of the U.S. “war on terrorism.” Now, as then, it is characterized as a remedy for anti- Americanism. Now as in the past, U.S. policy toward Palestine is the primary source of Arab and Muslim dislike for the U.S., generated as well by apparent American indifference to the suffering of Iraqi civilians under sanctions and the pervasive presence of U.S. military forces, viewed by many as protectors of autocratic and unpopular regimes rather than as defenders against external aggression.

Methods for disseminating propaganda are vastly more sophisticated today than in the past: there is now widespread access to radio and satellite television, videos, popular music, and the Internet. But the effectiveness of America's propaganda apparatus is limited by inadequate knowledge of Middle Eastern languages, culture, and social mores. The U.S. government seeks help from the private sector in targeting the region, but a predilection for cartoonish depictions of Middle Easterners and Middle East issues is likely to limit the appeal of products created by the American entertainment industry. For the foreseeable future, exchange- of- person programs will be hindered by visa restrictions, the inconvenience of travel for those from the region, hostility, and grass roots movements among Arabs and Muslims encouraging the rejection of U.S. influence.

...Propaganda strategies developed in tandem with war plans will include those arguments explaining and defending U.S. actions that have the widest popular appeal. As has become the rule for U.S. military operations, information will be controlled and filtered by the Pentagon. In Iraq, some will welcome an overthrow of the present repressive government, even if brought about by a foreign invasion; the U.S. government will do what it can to ensure that this reaction monopolizes news coverage. The administration has reason to be confident that a passive opposition party, a pro-war mainstream press, all the apparatus of news manipulation available to the government, and a public and mass media predisposed to view the motives of their country in a favorable light, and to hope that their sense of insecurity will be lessened by an attack on a designated enemy, are likely to ensure that a U.S. invasion of Iraq will be judged a success - at least in the short term.

When the CIA was busy doling out an estimated $2 billion to support the Afghan mujahadeen in the 1980s, Osama bin Laden and his colleagues were hailed as anti-communist freedom fighters. During the cold war, U.S. national security strategists, many of whom are riding top saddle once again in your administration, didn't view bin Laden's fanatical religious beliefs as diametrically opposed to western civilization. But now bin Laden and his ilk are unabashed terrorists.

Definitions of what constitutes terror and terrorism seem to change with the times. Before he became vice president, Dick Cheney and the U.S. State Department denounced Nelson Mandela, leader of the African National Congress, as a terrorist. Today Mandela, South Africa's president emeritus, is considered a great and dignified statesman. And what about Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon, who bears significant responsibility for the 1982 massacre of 1,800 innocents at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in Lebanon. What role will Sharon play in your crusade against international terrorism?

One thing I observe, everytime a BUSH is a president he declares war with Iraq. Does it have something to do with Oil?

Well over a year ago Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health released a report documenting 100,000 Iraqi dead as a consequence of the US invasion and occupation. At the time, they did not include the thousands of deaths in Falluja as part of their study because they did not want to skew the results upwards. Now, more than a year after the study, there are undoubtedly many thousands more Iraqi deaths. A recent article on CounterPunch by Andrew Cockburn argues that the real death figure may approach 500,000

The price in blood that has already been paid for America's war against terror is only now starting to become clear. Not by Britain or the US, nor even so far by the al-Qaida and Taliban leaders held responsible for the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington. It has instead been paid by ordinary Afghans , who had nothing whatever to do with the atrocities, didn't elect the Taliban theocrats who ruled over them and had no say in the decision to give house room to Bin Laden and his friends.

The Pentagon has been character istically coy about how many people it believes have died under the missiles it has showered on Afghanistan. Acutely sensitive to the impact on international support for the war, spokespeople have usually batted away reports of civilian casualties with a casual "these cannot be independently confirmed", or sometimes simply denied the deaths occurred at all. The US media have been particularly helpful. Seven weeks into the bombing campaign, the Los Angeles Times only felt able to hazard the guess that "at least dozens of civilians" had been killed.

Now, for the first time, a systematic independent study has been carried out into civilian casualties in Afghanistan by Marc Herold, a US economics professor at the University of New Hampshire. Based on corroborated reports from aid agencies, the UN, eyewitnesses, TV stations, newspapers and news agencies around the world, Herold estimates that at least 3,767 civilians were killed by US bombs between October 7 and December 10. That is an average of 62 innocent deaths a day - and an even higher figure than the 3,234 now thought to have been killed in New York and Washington on September 11.

Of course, Herold's total is only an estimate. But what is impressive about his work is not only the meticulous cross-checking, but the conservative assumptions he applies to each reported incident. The figure does not include those who died later of bomb injuries; nor those killed in the past 10 days; nor those who have died from cold and hunger because of the interruption of aid supplies or because they were forced to become refugees by the bombardment. It does not include military deaths (estimated by some analysts, partly on the basis of previous experience of the effects of carpet-bombing, to be upwards of 10,000), or those prisoners who were slaughtered in Mazar-i-Sharif, Qala-i-Janghi, Kandahar airport and elsewhere

The real but unspoken reasons for the IRAQ war
      Summary

Although completely suppressed in the U.S. media, the answer to the Iraq enigma is simple yet shocking - it an oil CURRENCY war. The Real Reason for this upcoming war is this administration's goal of preventing further OPEC momentum towards the euro as an oil transaction currency standard. However, in order to pre-empt OPEC, they need to gain geo-strategic control of Iraq along with its 2nd largest proven oil reserves. This lengthy essay will discuss the macroeconomics of the "petro-dollar" and the unpublicized but real threat to U.S. economic hegemony from the euro as an alternative oil transaction currency.

It was not struck by a plane. That building fell in a perfectly executed demo fashion. I ask this. Do you really think George Bush is sooo innocent...I have worked for that prick for 3 years. I spent 2 of those years in the middle east. The people of the middle east are pretty damn cool in my book. I dont beleive in control and fear programs like Religion. But I can say this it seems that the politicians have problems with each other and when does something another does not like, they each go get there friends to help back them up, and then sit carelessly by the sidelines and watch others get hurt for there own agendas

So, we Americans have killed quite a few people. Every country has either more blood on their hands than us or have been to afraid to fight--ever, or were basically ran over by other countries.

France- when they did fight, they went overboard. Look up the French Revoultion.
Britain- We weren't the only ones who killed Native Americans. Remember where we came from. I never heard them apologizing for that.
Russia, Germany, Italy- Let's remember Stalin, Hitler, and Mussolini. Enough said.

Oh, and let's not forget what happened to India and Africa because of Imperialism.

The US may have killed quite a few people, but we are nowhere near the most. If you don't like America, get out. Oh, wait. You're not leaving? I wonder why..

How about when an American company Dow Chemical killed 50,000 people in Bophal India from an insectiside spill and then fought not to have to compensate the families. That's a slightly bigger deal than 9/11.

    • I disagree, sorry

"where the GOAL is killing civilianz and spread fear to an entire nation, or actually the whole world?"

Did Dow Chemical plan to kill those people?

It's tragic, don't get me wrong. But you can't compare those examples.

      • America

In Iraq since the war started there have been many times more deaths and devastation then what happened on 9/11. You don't hear about the autrocities in other countries besides a quick mention on the news. I believe the war on terrorism has cost many more lives then terrorism itself and other countries view America and Israel as the real terrorists. Before the topple of Saddam there weren't the number of terrorists in that country as now. Wake up people.

Its been written by 'rick-3464' and i think that you rarely find a so much informed american.Read it:
          it's a pity
that people keep there eyes closed and listen to what they are told. simple minded? not hardly! but when you actually reasearch and find the proof you sit with your eyes wide open and your jaw dropped.what better way to get people to support a war.
first we go into afghanistan hunting bin laden, we find him and drop more bombs on him than was dropped on berlin and effectivly lower a mountain 25 feet and help ourselves to the massive oil fields there.
then we say there are weapons of mass destruction in iraq so we can go and take over a country, and what do you know there isnt any weapons of mass destruction and just like before we take the oil.

bush knew 9/11 was going to happen, he knew who was involved and yes he could have stopped it, but he wanted the damn wars and the oil.
so in the end there has been thousands of americans and others killed and dying so he and his buddies can get richer off of free/stolen oil.
WELCOME TO THE NEW WORLD ORDER.
          By me:Thats exacly the truth!!!

          • You are correct, Sir...

I, personally, know people who were warned of this attack IN ADVANCE!

Besides, a building cannot "fall" faster than the rate of acceleration due to gravity without help.
